Hey all,

How hard would it be to port the Java GUI to make a NeoOffice web interface?

Please understand I have no programing experience so don't flame me. I just thought it would be a neat idea to have NeoOffice have a head start towards open source web office applications and corporate environments.

Almost impossible.
NeoOffice leverages Carbon, Cocoa and Java so it's impossible to make it become a plain Java applet.

IIRC, most of NeoOffice's code, including the Java code, is Mac OS X-specific.

Moreover, the underlying OpenOffice.org code probably isn't the ideal candidate for a server-side application ...

You may get a kick out of this:

http://blogs.sun.com/jclingan/entry/google_openoffice_and_starportal

Essentially StarPortal recreated an X11 style network GUI protocol. There used to be the hooks in VCL still remaining for the StarPortal service back in 1.0 days (the Java client was never open sourced...). Back then it was the kind of thing no one wanted, but it was theorized that was one of the big reasons Sun bought Star in the first place.

Ed doesn't run on Solaris?

I though ed was strictly limited to running on *BSD derivatives Wink (and prefers not to run on systems with wrong-endian CPUs...).

I think possibly some journalist was remembering the plot of a certain Thomas Hardy novel s/he read in school. Mind you, I don't want to remove that sliver of hope for ed's marital status... Smile
