Hello everyone! I'm running NeoOffice/J 0.8.3 on my iBook G4 with only 256 MB RAM. Neo seems to be quite the memory hog and until I'm able to acquire more RAM I am wondering... how far can I push the memory settings?. I'd like to see NeoJ run a bit faster for me. I tried changing the default settings "Use" and "Memory per Object" from 9 MB and 2.4 MB to 18 MB and 4.8 MB respectively. I doubled everything. My machine did not like this. Some jerky behavior appeared during launching as well as while minimizing applications. Other aberrations followed; graphic artifacts and whatnot. In addition, I cannot run iTunes along with NeoJ at the same time without serious strain on NeoJ. Oh G5 where art thou? Until then, any recommendations are very welcome. By the way, my workaround for listening to music at work is to use my windows machine as a radio. NeoOffice/J and my Mac handle all my "other" office needs.

I realize the slowdown could be due to my 800MHz processor. Have the minimum requirements even been conceived of yet?

Running two memory intensive applications (like NeoJ and iTunes) at the same time will cause performance to suffer. You will really notice it when you switch between the two applications as one's memory is moved to disk and the other's is retrieved from disk (i.e. swapping).
The biggest problem that I see is that the NeoJ binaries (which are mostly the OOo 1.0.3 binaries) are huge. So just loading the program can consume up to 100 MB of memory.
I am hoping that memory usage will improve when I upgrade NeoJ to the OOo 1.1 codebase as the size of the binaries will drop by 25% (from 197 MB to 147 MB).

Probably not. Several testers run G3 400 MHz machines and I use the same for my Panther testing and debugging. It runs at a reasonable speed if I don't open much else but quickly slows down when I open memory intensive applications.

I am on the updates mailing list. Very much looking forward to this! Thanks Patrick.

Ultimately, 256MB of RAM just isn't enough for good performance in OS X regardless of what apps you use. It's adequate, but not good. At the bare minimum I would recommend 512MB total and even more if you can afford it. It won't just be NO/J that you will see a significant improvement in and you could be surprised as to how much of a boost a simple RAM upgrade would give you. _________________ PBG4, 1.5GHz, SuperDrive, 1GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, 5400rpm 80GB HD, MacOS X 10.4.5
I agree, i have the 800 G3 iBook, with 640 of RAM (max for us poor G3 users) and I can run Neo/J, iTunes, Moz, etc all at once. Thing is a beast, doesn't seem to get bogged down much at all. (streaming songs over the network will do it...)

Yeah, you guys are right. I'm going to bite the proverbial bullet and throw down the $200 for a 512 MB chip from Apple. That'll max out my 800 MHz iBook G4. I remember when 16 MB of RAM was cutting edge stuff in an IBM PS2! Panther is a whole 'nother ballgame.

Don't waste your money on Apple's RAM. Get Crucial--it's significantly cheaper, and they have the best reputation in the business. My university, for instance, gets all their RAM exclusively from Crucial.
