Forgive me if this has been asked before. Is there any way to search all the Neo Office files on a hard disk for selected text? The OS 10 utilities that do text searches without requiring the disk to be indexed (such as Easyfind and Speedsearch) can't do it---presumably because the actual XML file is zipped. Is that correct? And does this mean it can't be done?

You are correct: all OpenOffice.org and NeoOffice/J files are zip files.

No, of course it can be done - it is just a question of how much time and effort is involved.

Specifically there exists solutions for doing what you want, but it might be difficult if you are not a progammer or not comfortable with using command line tools.

Doing a search online using keywords like :

search text OpenOffice.org XML zip

will reveal various options, and here is a good starting point if you want to proceed further on your own :

In addition to the options/hints Terry mentioned, from an end-user point of view you could request that the authors of the search utilities provide support for searching these documents (along with pointers to the file format specification and sample docs). I'd think support for the OOo format(s) would be easier for the search util authors to implement than support for proprietary binary formats like Microsoft's....
