PostPosted: Wed Sep 08, 2004 3:15 am    Post subject: XDarwin keeps crashing

I'm running on a twin processor G4 system. I've downloaded what I believe is the latest version of X11 for this machine and installed it.

Every time I try to start X, or OpenOffice I get the screen that says do i want to run rootless or full screen. I've tried both.

X appears to start. If I'm running OpenOffice I get the splash screen and it just about fills the bar on that screen. Then X disappears, taking OpenOffice with it, of course.javascript:emoticon('Sad')

Anyone suggest what is causing this? Or where I can find a log that will tell me why it keeps crashing?

Thanks in advance

Sorry - I should have said that I'm running OS 10.2.8, if that makes any difference.

All right, my brain is getting back into Unix mode eventually. Here's the console log for my latest attempt to start OpenOffice:

2004-09-08 11:37:27.391 XDarwin[1470]
XDarwin 1.3.0

XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your hardware is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

Warning: no access to tty (Inappropriate ioctl for device).
Thus no job control in this shell.
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!

waiting for X server to shut down

Quitting XDarwin...

My suspicions are drawn to the "no access to tty" line - but I'm not sure how to fix this. Anyone advise me, please?

Use the Console application to open any logs with the words "XDarwin", "soffice.bin", or in some cases, "???", in their name, in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter and/or ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter (where ~ is your home folder).

Then paste here the LAST crash reported in those files.

Hello, Terry,

Thanks for your help on this.

The only one of the logs you listed that I could find was ???.

The last entry on that log dated from 24/8/04, before I even downloaded OpenOffice. And, yes, I tried starting it up again today and there were no new crash logs.

Here's the last log in the ??? log file, for what it's worth:

As is often the case, not enough information has been provided for us to go on. What X11 Window Manager are you using? What version of OpenOffice.org did you install? etc.

If I had to guess, I would think you are using the "window-maker" Window Manager, and it is "window-maker" which is crashing. There was a bug in an early OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 installer, where it didn't install the "dlcompat" library on Mac OS X 10.2.x, and "window-maker" requires "dlcompat".

Look for logs containing the name "wmaker" and also "PWD=" (this has been known to occur, like "???"). If you don't find any, how about listing the names of CrashReporter logs you do find.

This is normal for a working XDarwin, so ignore that.

My apologies for not supplying enough information in the first place.

I downloaded and installed the port of OpenOffice 1.1.2 dated 27th June 2004. That was the only OS X port of 1.1.2 that I could find.

I've moved to XDarwin 4.4. which I downloaded in the hope that it would solve the problem. It didn't. Currently I'm using whatever window manager that defaults to. As far as I can tell from the default version of xinitrc (don't have one in my home directory yet) that is twm.

As far as logs go - well here's whats in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter:

xterm.crash.log
NortonAutoProtect.crash.log
Virtual PC 6.crash.log
AppleFileServer.crash.log
???.crash.log
NortonMissedTasks.crash.log
SmallScanner.crash.log

The Virtual PC 6 crash log is dated 3rd Sept. The next newest is the ??? log dated 24th August.

As for ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter that only has:

Microsoft Excel.crash.log
Microsoft Word.crash.log

Would it be best to download another window manager (using Fink) and try with that?

By the way - I just ran the Install_OpenOffice.org1.1.2 application. Should I have run some of the third party software as well?

Thanks for your help,

Dave

That sounds like the officially released version.

I have XDarwin 4.4 for Jaguar, but I don't know if I have installed it on Jaguar yet (I have tested it extensively with Panther). Yes, "twm" is probably the default X11 Window Manager - I think I was able to launch OpenOffice.org using "twm" on occasion, but it is fairly ugly, so I switched to "window-maker" when I could.

Of course I have my own personal suspicions about NortonAutoProtect/NortonMissedTasks - could you temporarily turn this stuff off (if you still have it installed and turned on), and see if that makes a difference.

Please paste the LAST entry of the "xterm.crash.log" here.

Just need to check something - is English your primary language? Is the Mac OS X preferred language US English, British English or something else? I have seen several crash reports for strange problems, and the one common thing seems to be a timezone in Western Europe.

Did you ever previously have a beta version of Apple's X11.app installed?

If you manually launch XDarwin, does it launch without crashing?

I've tried it with 'mwm' but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I turned NortonAutoProtect off and it made no difference whatsoever.

Well, I don't really think this relates to the problem at all (look at the date) but here it is:

I'm English, and the OS X preferred language is British English.

Nope.

Terry asked:

No, it behaves just the same, which is why the subject says "XDarwin keeps crashing". I don't believe the problem is with OpenOffice at all - it's an XDarwin problem. I had an older version of OpenOffice running on either 10.2.3 or 10.2.6 but then had a hard disc problem and am only just getting back to setting it up.

By the way - how do I quote what I'm replying to in this forum without getting the word "quote" in front of it?

Thanks for all your time and trouble,

Dave
