When a column or a group of cells in a Calc spreadsheet is given a background colour different from white it seems that the grid lines within and around the coloured cells disappear.
NeoOffice 3.

I took a closer look at this issue and found it was added by Novell's Go-oo engineers. The grid lines are present in OpenOffice.org 3.0.

Can you please submit a bug in NeoOffice's Bugzilla? That way we can see if we can find and reverse the change that Novell's Go-oo engineers added.

Thank you --fran

Please disregard my earlier post to file a bug in Bugzilla.

I have gone ahead and filed Bug 3392 in Bugzilla to track this issue.

Please add yourself to the cc: list in the bug to follow its progress and to add comments.

It appears that Novell's Go-oo engineers were trying to emulate Microsoft Excel's behavior, which removes gridlines when the background is in color. They consider this a feature rather than a bug.

Although it may be dupicative, I want to post what I wrote in that bug here:

Assigning to myself as I found the Novell Go-oo patch that causes this:

sc-cellbackground-over-gridlines.diff

If I can, I will remove this patch. While this may make some users unhappy that want NeoOffice to behave exactly like Excel, I believe that we should remove this feature because there is no way to turn this feature off.

In contrast, in NeoOffice 2.2.5 and OpenOffice.org 3.0, you see the grid lines by default and you can hide all gridlines by selecting the Tools :: Options menu, selecting the NeoOffice Calc :: View item, and unchecking the Grid Lines checkbox. In addition, in NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access you can hide all gridlines in one step by pressing the Toggle Gridlines in Current Sheet toolbar icon.

Since the NeoOffice 2.2.5 and OpenOffice 3.0 are more flexible than the Go-oo feature, I will remove the Go-oo patch and make the code use the OpenOffice 3.0 code.

FYI. NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access 2 Patch 0 has been released with the fix for this bug. Download links to the patch and full installer are in this post.
