Hello,

After seeing the beta screenshots of Lotus Symphony for Mac, I thought, the tabbed interface used like in the Lotus pack, would make great ease of use. It would be simply great.

And -sorry, if previously asked- because of the reason that OOo 3 has native Mac support, will Neooffice use that, instead switching from Java?

Lotus Symphony is not open source code so neither we nor OpenOffice.org has access to it nor do we have the rights to use their code even if we had access to it.

Also, since Lotus Symphony only runs on Mac OS X 10.5.x on Intel, I suspect that their code does not work on the other three Mac OS X combinations that we support (Mac OS X 10.4.x and 10.5.x on both Intel and PowerPC).

No. We are not using OpenOffice.org 3.0's native Mac code and have no plans to do so. We have found that their code is less stable and in many cases slower than our existing Java code so it makes no sense to throw away our well-tested and optimized code in NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access.

Thanks for the reply.

I actually meant, "an interface that has tabs", instead using Lotus's interface. I think it would require a lot of labor and etc., but as an idea, to be implemented in future.

Also, thanks for the information. Smile

I was going to make this same request.

Lotus Symphony is a terrible, terrible, terribly slow java app masquerading as a Cocoa app. It is slow, unstable and pretty much unusable. You can't even put it in the dock because it generates a pseudo app every time it's opened, thereby rendering any previous dock icons worthless.

HOWEVER, if you manage to get it to open without quitting and you get multiple files opened within, it uses one window with a tabbed interface for all open documents. It is the brilliant awesomeness I have been waiting for a word processor to have for decades!

Again, Symphony is unusable and use of their code is not the issue or what I think anyone would recommend, but this tab feature will someday be in every word processor worth anything... and I want it today. I want it so badly I'd likely donate the price of a Microsoft Office suite to the Neo team if it would make its way into 3.0.

I'm serious. It is the future, just as tabs are now standard in web browsers. If NeoOffice could bring the first stable example of it to us, this tabbed word pro interface would generate more press and more praise than anyone could ever imagine. IMHO.

So I beg the dev team to consider it, no matter how tricky it may at first seem. Thanks!

This needs a lot more than praise, it needs staffing. Sorry, but given our existing donation levels, there is no money to go hire a couple full-time developers to do this work (we barely make enough to pay one person).

Well, if you touted a mockup and description of this planned feature for 3.0 with a call-to-action on the site for the funds to accomplish it -- plus an email blast, press release and a request for some article love from TUAW, MacWorld, et. al... I think we could generate Obama-style enthusiasm (i.e. $$$).

This optimist happens to be a copywriter. I would volunteer my services for said email blast, press release and web page call-to-action if you guys would seriously consider doing it.

I admire your enthusiasm, but this is not a business endeavor that I or Ed are willing to invest in. Yes, I am talking about real investment here. PR is nice but you are talking about real work. This is not a two month project and is more like a few man-years of hard reengineering of the OpenOffice.org code base. I don't know how much it would cost but I estimate that you are talking about needing to raise probably $500,000 to $1 million dollars to hire staff, find offices for them, pay them benefits, etc. to accomplish this level of work.

That is a huge amount of money and even if you raised that kind of money (that is far more than we have raised in six years of working on NeoOffice), managing that kind of growth and people management would pretty much kill our existing support and releases.

If this is something that you want to pursue, then I would highly recommend that you organize your own company or non-profit organize, raise the funds, hire and manage the developers, and GPL the code. After all, NeoOffice is GPL so you can use our code as a base without any investment.

I dont know if im posting in the right place here but seeing as tabbed documents seem a while away, are their any applications for mac that would make switching between documents easier?

Something like the command tab would be good. At the moment command tab selects programs, not individual documents.
thanks

In all Mac OS X applications, Command-` moves to the next document window within an application.

It's the accent key which also has the ~ symbol on it. On my iBook keyboard its just between the z and the shift key.

Is there any way of making it work like command tab where you see a list and can click on the one you want?

In all Mac OS X application, click and hold on the application's Dock icon to see a list of open document windows. AFAIK, Mac OS X does that make a list available using key shortcuts.
