Howdy there,

I can access checking grammar through the tools - add ons menu but I can't get Neooffice to check it while I am typing even though it's set for that in the preferences. It will check spelling while I type just not the grammar. Is there another setting besides in preferences - writing aids?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

NeoOffice's grammar checking code only does grammar checking when you select one of the Tools :: Adds-Ons :: Grammar Check menu.

While it is theoretically possible to make the grammar checking code respond to every keystroke, we did not enable that as we found that doing this makes NeoOffice grind to a near halt. It grind to a near halt because the entire sentence must be sent to the Mac OS X grammar checking service with each keystroke and since grammar checking a sentence is a very time consuming process in comparison to painting the inserted character on the screen, grammar checking with each keystroke slows key entry by to a crawl.

There is also an extension called Languagetool. It was notoriously impossible to use it under NeoOffice 2.2.5 (and earlier), but I seem to remember that it came with NeoOffice 3.0 at one point in time (the original NeoOffice 3.0 EA?). It it is however not included in the actual version (NeoOffice 3.0 EA 2 patch 0).

While the NeoOffice grammar checker (using OS X services) is probably a first choice, it may actually be that Languagetool is the only checker available for some languages.

Does anyone actually know how both grammar checkers compare?

Mac OS X Leopard's grammar checker is anything but a first choice. It only supports English, and then, just a "subset" of English, actually Sad

Now I found back where I'd seen that Languagetool in NeoOffice. NeoOffice 3.0 EA 2 does actually include some version of it which is not listed in the extension manager but which should be accessible through the Tools::LanguageTool menu. I write should be as accessing it results in an error. Installing the latest version of Languagetool (0.9.6) using the extension manager does however resolve the problem.

Sorry, but this is incorrect. We do not ship the third-party Languagetool extension with NeoOffice. You probably had it installed as a user extension in NeoOffice 2.2.5 and the extension got imported from your NeoOffice 2.2.5 preferences when you first launched NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access.

Ok, I didn't know of the possibility of legacy profile enhancements getting imported in NeoOffice 3.0 EA, hence my wrong diagnosis.

That said, it seems to me that the more recent version of LanguageTool is only marginally less buggy in NeoOffice 3.0 EA. Not sure why, but opening some documents results in a steady flood of error messages, whereas for other docs LanguageTool just works fine.
