@ MacRat: yeah, I was just about to post the news.

I am now not so worried about OpenOffice.org, but a lot more about MYSQL, which is a Sun subsidiary..

@Yoxi: and they made a charming couple, while it lasted..

Best wishes,
Oscar

It now appears that Oracle will be the buyer....

Should be interesting to see what Oracle does with the open source projects.

And the hardware Razz Oracle's never struck me as much of a hardware company....

When I put my Larry Ellison hat on, it says to me "Capture Java, kill MySQL, and throw the rest of the company in the trash" Razz

Well I don't know if they really would intend to kill MySQL. After all, they did buy the InnoDB engine a while back which was one of the popular ones for MySQL. If anything I'd expect them more to put some of the Oracle SQL Extensions into the language to try to lock more products into their variant (or perhaps the reverse; incorporate the MySQL SQL oddities into Oracle).

But I think this probably will mean the end of several of the smaller projects at Sun for sure...I predict no more SunSPOTs Smile Given the fact that the Oracle press release was talking about how it presents additional cash flow opportunities, I fully expect that projects that don't make a profit and can't be sold off will be shuttered.
