As I proposed here, information about clearing stuck locks is now in the wiki, in the Troubleshooting Tips page.

I pasted the problem and solution in English into the three otherwise-updated versions of that page, French, Italian, and Dutch.

It might be good to get the actual error message text and add it to the answer (and possibly to adjust the heading ("NeoOffice claims a document is in use by another user after a crash") for the problem based on how much the text differs from what I think I remember.

Thanks Smokey. This new OpenOffice.org locking mechanism really is unintuitive and having that tip there really helps.
