For several years now, Ed has been running the cvsweb package on an old spare server of his. The cvsweb package is an old perl script that, when run, queries our anonymous cvs repository and returns cvs files and commit logs to a web browser.

Unfortunately, about 99.9% of the hits to the cvsweb website are from a handful of malicious webbots. Since few if any real people are using the site and that site puts real load on our anonymous cvs server, Ed has taken the cvsweb website offline.

For the few of you who have used the cvsweb website, we recommend that you checkout the NeoOffice source code using the anonymous cvs checkout instructions on the NeoOffice build instructions page.

The NeoOffice code will continue to remain available for free via anonymous cvs. We are only eliminating a high load website that is straining our anonymous cvs server. Hopefully, by eliminating the high load generated by the webbots hitting the cvsweb website, our anonymous cvs server will actually be a bit more responsive.

I noticed a few weeks ago when I was looking for something that cvsweb was "broken", but I forgot to follow up and see why. Thanks for the explanation.

Ed took it offline only yesterday. IIRC, there was a Unix permissions problem that was causing cvsweb to not be able to read the source files but that got fixed.

FYI. Ed told me he that saw this same problem when checking out via anonymous cvs earlier this week. He thinks that he has fixed it but if anyone has any problems doing a cvs checkout using the instructions on the NeoOffice build instructions page, please post any cvs errors that you see and we will try to fix the problem.
