PostPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 11:08 am    Post subject: Updates to FAQ page

Yesterday I spent some time and updated the NeoOffice FAQ page. The questions on that page have not changed, but some of the answers were focussed entirely on the questions that were common several years ago but are no longer common now.

Since many of the answers were written before Ed and I started requiring donations to use our download services, the questions that I see on various blogs, forums, and mailing lists tend to center around our use of download services to fund our project so I felt that the answers on that page really needed to be updated to address what people are commonly asking. Specifically, I have added a new NeoOffice is open source software. Aren't NeoOffice downloads required to be free? question as well as adding text that explains why we need donations and what such donations are used for.

Also, because I have noticed a small but steady number of complaints on various blogs, forums, and mailing lists of people who cannot build NeoOffice on Mac OS X 10.6 or higher, I have added a new warning on the NeoOffice build instructions page so that people are aware of the technical issues that prevent building NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org on Mac OS X 10.6 or later before they spend the time trying to figure out why the build fails on their machine.

If anyone can spare the time to translate any of the updates to the NeoOffice FAQ or build instructions pages, I will definitely post them to the website. Also, if you think some common questions are missing and need to be added, let us know.

That's a very nice re-write.

Orderly, and it makes sense at a glance — which is important, where audiences sometimes don't spend more than a moment glancing at content.

German translation for the building page.

Code:
Building NeoOffice on Mac OS X 10.6 or higher is not feasible and the build will eventually fail. Numerous pieces of NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org source code would need to be rewritten in order for NeoOffice to compile on Mac OS X 10.6 or higher so we compile NeoOffice on the oldest Mac OS X version that NeoOffice can run on and use dynamic loading for APIs and features on newer Mac OS X versions.

Here's the Dutch translations what is still in English on the FAQ page:

Code:
NeoOffice is open source software.

Thanks you for the translations. I have posted your Dutch translations on the main website's Dutch FAQ page. Also, I liked how you split the lengthy paragraphs so I made the same splits in the other languages' FAQ pages.

Some more text from the german FAQ:
Code:
NeoOffice is open source software. Aren't NeoOffice downloads required to be free?

No. Open source applies to the type of license used for the software's source code and NeoOffice's source code uses the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Nein.

Selling download services for pre-built binaries is not a violation of the GPL. Apparently this misunderstanding of the GPL is so common GNU - the organization that wrote the GPL - clearly states that there is no such requirement in their GPL FAQ.

The GPL does require that anyone can access, modify, and redistribute source code and so, to ensure compliance with the GPL's source code requirements, we have always provided detailed instructions for accessing and building the NeoOffice source code are on the NeoOffice Build Instructions page.

The cost and time spent on NeoOffice is very large for Patrick Luby and Ed Peterlin - the Mac software engineers that have created all of the improvements in NeoOffice that are not in OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice. While many free software products such as OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice are funded by huge donations from large corporations such as Oracle and Novell, NeoOffice has no corporate sponsors. Without any corporate sponsors, Patrick and Ed must rely exclusively on donations from our users to continue implementing the latest Mac OS X features in NeoOffice.
