I'm having a problem (not sure when it started) where I go to print a document in NeoOffice, and in the Print dialogue, duplex printing is set to off and greyed out.

I have to export to PDF and then I can print normally in duplex from there instead.

The NeoOffice code does not enable to disable any of the printer specific settings. Instead, it appears to me that Apple's native print dialog code reads automatically enables or disables settings in the in the print dialog based on which printer is selected plus an unknown list of preferences cached in a separate file for each application.

Since you say that the duplex option is enabled in the Preview application, I suspec that the preferences cache file for NeoOffice is corrupted. To test my theory, quit NeoOffice, move the following file from the Finder to the Trash, and relaunch NeoOffice (note that "~" means your Home folder):

Code:
~/Library/Preferences/org.neooffice.NeoOffice.plist

Is the duplex option still disabled after doing the above?

There is one more thing to try if the problem is not fixed by deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/org.neooffice.NeoOffice.plist file: can you install the following test patch and see if that fixed the problem? The test patch uses no Java in any of the printing process so if only the test patch fixes the problem, then that tells me that Apple's or NeoOffie's Java code is somehow indirectly causing this problem:

Intel:

Well, that's interesting. I discovered (after installing the patch) that the actual user-configurable duplex option is not on the Preview pane of the print dialogue (which just shows it set to Off, and greyed out); for my printer (an OKI B411d), it's on the Setup pane instead. It's set to long-edge duplex by default.

However, before installing the patch, NeoOffice doesn't print duplex even though it was set to on - after installing it, it does. So I guess there is some java interference going on there? Anyway, thanks for giving me back my duplex - saving a bit of a tree...

It is good to hear that our new "de-Javafied" printing code works properly. While implementing the new code, I was reminded of the many hacky fixes in our Java printing code that we implemented to fix a bunch of Java printing bugs.

Java was useful in the early days for us and I don't regret that we used it for so many years, but I am definitely happy to remove Java and work directly with native code.
