I launched NeoOffice 3.3 Beta Patch 1 Test 3 yesterday and it hung while trying to open previously opened documents. (My GraphLines.ods and Page Position Test.odt). I took a sample (attached) and force quit NeoOffice.

It did the same on a subsequent launch, however it launched ok today, following a shut down overnight and restart today.

Thank you for the sample. I ran into a similar hang after rebooting in Mac OS X 10.8 and NeoOffice had a document open when I started the rebooting process. I had tweaked the code slightly after the last NeoOffice 3.3 Beta Patch 1 test patch but I did include the code change in NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2.

So, can you install NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2 and see if the hang reoccurs? I suspect that it occurs when you shutdown or logout while NeoOffice has documents open and you choose the "reopen open documents" option that Mac OS X displays in a dialog.

NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2 can be downloaded from the NeoOffice download page.

I've installed Beta 2 now, but so far no hang.

I'll shut down now with NeoOffice and the same documents open and see what happens tomorrow - it's past my bedtime now!

One extra note: NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2 was built on Mac OS X 10.6 with a newer compiler (NeoOffice 3.2.1 and the first 3.3 Beta were built on Mac OS X 10.5) so if you find any other hangs or crashes, please let us know.

I'm afraid I can't seem to reproduce the hang. If it's any help it happened when NeoOffice had just opened the second window. The title bar still said "Page Position Test.ods - NeoOffice Writer" and the window was empty.

I thought something had changed. The installation steps on the left are now a bit hard to read through the NeoOffice logo!

Hopefully that means the fix for the "after reboot" bug also fixed the bug that you saw.

Of course, if the hanging bug reappears in the future, don't hesitate to post a new sample and I will investigate.

Daniel Pimley (the moderator that designed the ship icon for us) created a new 1024 x 1024 pixel version of the ship icon for the installer and Finder icon to support Retina display Macs. Sadly, on non-Retina Mac OS X machines, the Mac OS X installer tool does not scale down the icon to a reasonable size. It is too bad the Mac OS X tool does not allow 2 different icons for Retina and non-Retina display.

I don't have a Mac I can test this on (or I would), but if you used 10.7+'s
Code:
tiffutil -cathidpicheck background.tiff background@2x.tiff -out /path/to/final/background.tiff
to merge the 512px (named "background.tiff") and 1024px (named "background@2x.tiff") images into a single multi-page TIFF, will Installer use the right one on non-Retina Macs? Or is this a bug in Installer.app?

At least that's the way things are supposed to work with Retina-ready images in normal Cocoa apps.

(Actually, the manpage examples use 2 .png files as input for the -cathidpicheck option rather than 2 tiffs; I don't know if that matters for sure, since other options can use 2 tiff input files, but I understand -cathidpicheck is a bit finicky. And it has to be 10.7+'s tiffutil; the images generated by -cathidpicheck on 10.5 or 10.6 don't work correctly).

I was able to open the original ship.icns file and resave it as a .tiff file that includes not only the 1024 x 1024 image, but also the original .icns file's 512 x 512 image.

I also reduced the contrast by half and moved the image to the bottom right in the installer so that the next test patch will look like the attached screen snapshot on non-Retina displays. I am not sure if the Mac OS X installer tool will use the 1024 x 1024 image when run on Retina displays but, at worst, the 512 x 512 image will be displayed which is better than the 256 x 256 image used in the NeoOffice 3.2.1 installers.

I have included the icon size and positioning changes described in my last post in the following test patch.

Can you install the following test patch and tell us if the changes make the installer text more readable?:

Snap!

That's much clearer. 'Fraid I can't tell you what it looks like on a retina display.

FYI. I have included the fix for the "hang after reboot" bug as well as the updated icon in the installer in NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2 Patch 1 which you can download from the NeoOffice 3.3 Beta 2 patch download page.
