I was adding a graphic of my signature to a letter today when NeoOffice hung. I had just changed the Wrap setting and was starting to drag the image to a new position when a large white square appeared on screen and NeoOffice hung.

I took a sample before I force quit and re-started it. I also took a screen shot so you can see the white square.

I have managed to re-created the hang once and it appears to be related to moving an image with wrap set to Background.

I am not able to reproduce this. Maybe I am doing different steps than you?

I created the attached .odt file with an image in the header like in your screen snapshot. I then right-clicked on the image and selected the Wrap :: In Background option from the popup menu that appeared and dragged the image throughout the page.

Can you reproduce the hanging with my document? If so, what steps did you do to reproduce the hanging?

Ignore my last post. I can now reproduce the hanging using the steps in my last post on Mac OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks.

I will investigate this bug and when I have a fix, I will post a test patch for you to try.

I spoke too soon. I could only reproduce the hanging 2 times and I can no longer reproduce it.

Are you able to reproduce it consistently? If so, any hints you can provide as to how to reproduce it would be greatly appreciated. The only thing that I can tell is that it is hanging in the Picture dialog that is displayed when you right-click or Control-click on the image and select the Picture option from the popup menu that appears.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I was on Mac OS X 10.9.2 now.

I'll try again tomorrow to reproduce it, but I was only able to make it happen once after the first hang, then it wouldn't do it again for me either.

Based on the sample in your original post and attaching a debugger when the hang occurred on my machine, I have narrowed down the source of the hang to a very specific section of our code.

Like you, I still can't easily reproduce the hanging but nevertheless I have a theory as to what is causing the hang. To test my theory, I have reimplemented some of the event queue management code in the following test patches.

Can you install either of the test patch and, over the next several days, see if the hanging still occurs?:

NeoOffice 3.4.1:

NeoOffice 2013.2:

I've tried, but I can't reproduce the crash again.
I've now installed NeoOffice 3.4.1 Patch 0 Test 4, and still can't reproduce it, and hopefully won't in future after your tweak.

Thanks,

Andy

Thanks for testing my fix. Since neither of us can reliably reproduce this bug, I don't think we will see any confirmation if my changes fixed the bug. But if it didn't fix the bug, hopefully you will eventually see this bug reoccur.

If the hanging bug does eventually reoccur, please don't hesitate to post another sample and I will investigate it.

FYI. I have included the fix for this bug in NeoOffice 3.4.1 Patch 1 which can be downloaded from the NeoOffice patch download page.

FYI. I have included the fix for this bug in NeoOffice 2013.3 which is available in Apple's Mac App Store.
