Hi,

I noticed that when you have used Neo/J and resized the window, the next time you open the application the window size goes back to its default size and the previous window size is ignored.

Cheers

Unfortunately, this is a new "feature" that Sun put into the underlying OOo 1.1.2 code. So both OOo 1.1.2 and Neo/J 1.1 Alpha 1 always open that blank window at a preset size. Sad

IANA programmer or adept bugzilla reader, but my reading of OOo bugs such as http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=31934 and http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=17226 indicate that remembering window size/position was working properly for other platforms on 1.1.x releases.

Based on that understanding, I've filed a bug http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=33660 with the porting project, so perhaps the Mac behavior can be fixed to match the other platforms--and therefore make it into NeoJ....

Like I said, IANA..., so I could be reading things completely wrong. Sad It is, alas, a major annoyance.

Actually, if you look closely at bug 17226, it states that the window sizing worked in the OOo 1.1 beta builds but stopped working in the official OOo 1.1 release. This means that it stopped working on other platforms.

It appears that it stopped working because OOo stopped saving the window dimensions to your user configuration files. Realistically, fixing application bugs like this one are way outside of my available resources.

So, instead, I have chosen a simpler solution. I figured out how to make an empty Writer document open instead of the default empty window. Since Writer remembers the last window position and size, you will get the desired behavior the next time you open Neo/J. This makes the behavior the same as Neo/J 0.8.4.

I'll put this change in the first patch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you say that one of the things that sped up the loading time was the blank window at startup? If so, wouldn't this update negate that speed increase?

Personally, I would rather have a faster start time than a window that remembers the size anyday. Maybe a preference could be added to allow the user to pick which he/she prefers.

It doesn't change the amount of time it takes to display the menubar which is the point at which the application is usable. The only change is that the splash screen shows longer and then a fully usable Writer window appears very quickly. This is, IMHO, actually smoother than the current way where the splash screen disappears quickly but you see an unusable window for several seconds.

Sorry, the underlying OOo code is not trivial and I don't have an infinite amount of time to add custom application preferences and features. Many people assume that OOo is a little application but it consists of 0.5 GB (yes, gigabytes!) of source code. It takes dozens of Sun's engineers (who have an average of 5 - 10 years experience with the code) to produce an OOo release.

I'll include my vote for Patrick's workaround - the current situation of reversion to some non-user definable default is immensely annoying.

I'm glad to hear program load time will not be affected. In that case, go with the Writer window opening on program launch, as that will be best for all.

I absolutely know that there is a ton of source code involved in this project. I too am a developer, and although I have never worked on a project a large as NeoOffice/J, I do know how much work goes into this. My idea for a preference was just that, and idea. Without hose, we realy wouldn't have anything to develop Wink

The new "load Writer as the default" is in "patch-1". Download and installation instructions are here:

You are slightly off.

1. - This is a forum for NeoOffice/J. OpenOffice is elsewhere on this site
2. - This a Macintosh forum. I doubt if anyone here knows much about Windows builds.

Try http://tools.openoffice.org/build.html instead..
