I found that there are some guys working on Latvian dictionaries for OpenOffice. I downloaded the files and put them according to the instructions into NeoOffice. All works fine but the spellchecker does not really recognise Latvian characters. I mean - words that are correct it misinterprets as incorrect and then changes into words where Latvian characters are replaced with some incorrect symbols. Clearly there is some problem with font compatibility. but what is the problem? Can anybody has a clue?

People from the Latvian team told me that the dictionary is in ISO8859-13 (Baltic) encoding and uses myspell spellchecker (not ispell or aspell) and that it works with most known windows and linux machines (obviously no-one had tested it on mac before me). Anybody any clues regarding this? Should it work with NeoOffice?

MySpell is the default OOo spellchecker (at least so it seems from the Preferences: Language Settings: Writing Aids), so that shouldn't be the problem. And obviously it's "working" in the sense that it runs and flags words.

My wild guess is that the problem is with the encoding, but I don't know enough about the way dictionaries are supposed to be encoded....

If you have X11 OOo on your Mac, you might try with that to see if the results are any different.

The very first check must be for the font: is it compliant with the encoding of the dictionnary?

How can I check and/or change encoding?
