How would this be any different from the existing news mailing list (see http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/contact.php) that we have been using?

In addition, on the subject of tips/discussion, I think we need to be careful not to spread our resources too thinly.

Specifically, most folks come to trinity for Mac support, and most of our more experienced testers and users "hang out" (or at least "stop by") trinity on a regular basis to answer questions, as do the devs. Many are too busy to follow an additional list, even one like dev@porting, on a regular basis. We also try to get the best hints and tips turned into nice articles (that are more complete and easier to follow) in the wiki to make them easier to find. (And if people are interested but don't want to stop by every day, Ed has RSS feeds set up--you can subscribe to the one(s) for the particular forum(s) you're interested in and see when things change (and, IIUC, the first bits of the post(s)).

Instituting a new list to cover tips and hints would either result in a list that, given time constraints, probably doesn't have the same level of dev/tester knowledge or result in some of the folks posting only in one place and some posting only in the other. This latter part hurts the whole community because the knowledge and troubleshooting/tip-producing skill is divided and the eventual tips and hints which result are divided--someone stopping by trinity might not find an answer because the question was only raised on the list and vice versa.

There's not an active enough (posting-wise) user community yet to support more than one tips/hints repositiory, and we already have that in trinity+neowiki.

My 2¢

Smokey

As far as I remember, you need to have a Yahoo account to join one of "their" lists. I do not want to have a Yahoo account.

For me, similarly, it is a response of

Thanks, but no thanks.

I certainly wouldn't consider joining a Yahoo (or MSN, or any other) alternative. (Alternative as I can't see these as complementary.)

Please, let us concentrate our very limited resources in this one place and avoid diluting the impact of our efforts.

agreed. There are enough avenues for communication. Enough sites and lists.

But thanks for the suggestion!
