We have a fairly annoying problem with font management. We have about 15 computers(G4's, G5's and eMacs) that use anywhere from 1000 to 5000 fonts and I'm having a very hard time finding the best way to manage the fonts using OS X. All the systems are 800Mhz or better and all have over 512MB of RAM and are updated to OS 10.3.8
Using Font Book I have tried installing the fonts in both the user library (HD>USERS>(user name)>LIBRARY>FONTS) by selecting installation "for me only" and the main library (HD>LIBRARY>FONTS) by selecting "for all users of this computer." In both situations, once I restart the system and log back in I get to stare at the spinning beach ball for sometimes up to 10 minutes. I've also tried bypassing Font Book and installing all the fonts directly into the before mentioned folders only to receive the same results.
What I have resulted to is installing via drag and drop all the fonts into the OS X System folder (HD>SYSTEM>LIBRARY>FONTS) and removing the fonts from the users library and the main library. The problem with this is that instead of looking at a beach ball for 10 minutes after login, before reaching the login screen I stare at a blank OS X box for up to 10 minutes. Once the login screen is reached, I can log in and out of users very rapidly. This is better for our situation, but it sucks if the system ever needs to be restarted.
Does anyone have any suggestions? These slow downs are directly related to the fonts without question and everything else is in good order with these machines. Please help!
