I posted the following on users@openoffice.org:
Quote:
In Writer, when I type "PO/Job #" I get "PØJob #". Something similar happens when I type "RTL/LTR" (the slash becomes a bar across the first L, but I can't type the character here). How can I turn off this overzealous behavior?

Hint: It isn't an obvious autotext option, and I've looked through Tools/Options without finding a cure.

FWIW, I'm using OpenOffice in the form of NeoOffice/J under Mac OS X 10.3.8, but I'm pretty sure it's an underlying OpenOffice issue. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I received only one response:
Quote:
I think it may be something to do with the install / Mac version since I cannot replicate on either 1.1.2 nor 1.9.62 (both on XP mind you)...

Anyone else able to replicate ?

In general however it does sound like autocorrect/auto replace functionality. Maybe a more indepth search may be required.

I don't believe this is an NOJ problem, but I'm confident that someone here is sharp enough to point me to a solution...? Thanks! Cheers,

Does the text correct itself if you highlight the text and change the font to a standard Mac OS X font like Lucida Grande? If so, what font are you using?

Didn't take you long to zero in on the crux of the matter, did it? Very Happy Yep, Lucida Grande fixes it, and the font I was using was Palatino. FWIW, Goudy also fixes it, as does Geneva (can't get much more "standard Mac OS X" than that). But Palatino is also a Mac standard...?

This is the same problem described in 449. Can you send me your Palatino font file? It seems that Mac OS X's text layout functions merge some character combinations into a single different character for some fonts. Not surprisingly, this seems to happen with older fonts.

If you send me the font, I can see if there is some way to turn off this unusual behavior.

Right on: this is the good old TrueType version, probably dating back to the initial release of System 7! But I thought it was only the newer fonts that could do that--e.g., turn 'f' followed by 'i' into the ligature '?'...? It seems like an advanced capability, but a little overbearing. Maybe there's a way to over-ride it that I don't know about.

Will Java 1.4.2 fix these font issues? My signature (handwriting) font still won't work. Sad [Font sent.] Cheers,

In Cocoa apps there is a menu option to turn ligatures off (e.g in TextEdit, Format>Font>Ligature>Use None) - obviously this doesn't exist in NOJ owing to its background and ligatures appear to be on by default. I suspect it would take a fair amount of effort to offer the same ligature options available to Cocoa apps in NOJ so it might be the best compromise for Patrick to turn auto-ligatures off by default in NOJ (assuming that is remotely possible).

Gib,

Can you send the font file in a zip file zipped using StuffIt or some similar zipping tool? For some reason, I cannot get any of my mail applications to save the font file attachment that you sent me.

Gib,

The bug is now fixed. Check out the last comment in bug 449 to get the test patch with the fix in it.

Oh, yeah, that did it! Opened the same document and it displayed just fine right off the bat. Thanks! Cheers,
