Neo/J works like any other OSX application in this respect. For each type of file you want Neo to open, find an example file with the appropriate extension, (.doc, .xls and .ppt) and get info on it in the Finder. In the Open with... pane, click the disclosing triangle if necessary, and then select Neo/J as the application to use from the drop-down menu. Then click the change all button, OK the dialog, and close the get info window. Repeat with the other file types.
If the files are not showing extensions, get info on one and make sure the hide extension box is not checked. If there is really no extension, go through the procedure for setting the application as above, and it may work anyway. However, you will likely have to do it twice, once for extensionless files and once for extensioned ones. It is good practice to have file extensions on your files for ease of exchange with PC users, even though many Mac apps still manage without them.
If you reinstall Appleworks, or any other application that can read the same files as Neo, you will have to go through the process again - the rule is that the most recently installed app gets the file, unless the user changes things manually.
