Don't we deserve a few word of explanation about this happy ending? Just for us to know what was wrong, eventually?

the culprit was indeed the ISO translation when uploading. The issue is that the menu items are written to the database when the program is installed. So, when I re-uploaded everything, nothing changed. When I re-installed it, however... poof!

So now I will learn the inter-wiki stuff. (And use a PNG for the logo)

French is up, are there other languages ready to go?

How's come NeoWikiFR lets you choose interface languages per-user but NeoWiki does not?

Edit: there are a number of other differences in pre-created (empty) pages, such as page for FAQs, rules to follow, etc. (see this vs. this)....

Maybe it's a new version of MediaWiki?

yes, the French site is 1.4.5 and the NeoWiki is 1.3.9.

the reason for this is i wanted to make sure that 1.4.5 was up and running before i updated the neowiki...

and i wanted to make a central location for the software, which i think i did.

so then I'll look into updating the main site to 1.4.X (After a thorough back-up)

I just upgraded mine to 1.4.7. Went quite well. The installer will take care of the tech stuff for you. Most important between 1.3.x and 1.4.x is that the skin directories are organised differently and that the upload (images) directory no longer contain skin images (which was pretty silly in the first place).

Good luck. Let me know if you want the step-by-step upgrade document i made for myself.

Best wishes,
Oscar

My feeling, from an "ease of use/ease of sharing/ease of admin" point of view is that one wiki is better than 2/3/5, particularly if you upgrade the main wiki to 1.4.x so that everyone can choose the skin/message language of his or her preference.

We have all the same accounts, images, templates, and so forth. Easier to make and keep track of updates in multiple languages. You (Jake) don't have to worry about admining two wikis and banning two sets of spammers and maintianing/updgrading two wikis....

Right now there are two downsides: Pages in the Fr: namespace prepend Fr: to the title (unlike pages in the Special: namespace), and the auto-language links in the sidebar (the whole reason we were using the Fr: namespace rather than just Nom de Page en Français as the page title) don't work, so we're doing those interlanguage links manually. (Well, a third downside: you spent all this time trying to figure out how to get the French wiki working Sad) Presumably both of the former can be fixed with some config tweaks somehow and make the single-wiki-multiple-languages situation even better.

Since right now we basically just have a French wiki content- and interest-wise, I'll go along with whatever our French colleagues want, but I think fixing one wiki is best Smile
