PostPosted: Tue Sep 13, 2005 1:37 pm    Post subject: Java 1.3.1 and Java 1.4.2 Release 2.0 update for 10.4.x

Should we install this, or will it break NOJ in any way? I'm a little reluctant to be a guinea pig for this one Embarassed

Anyone installed it and had no problems/problems with NOJ, let us know here please.

TIA.

Edit: Here's the blurb from Software Update:

Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2 delivers improved reliability and compatibility for Java on Mac OS X v10.4. This release includes Java 2 Platform Standard Edition versions 1.3.1_16 and 1.4.2_09.

I figured I may as well be the guinea pig. I tried it and just started Neo/J, which came up okay... was able to load a .sxw writer file fine...

my very rudimentary test says it's a thumbs-up.

I see we get some sort of update on 10.3.9, too (unexpected, to say the least!); the verbose description in SW Update is:
Quote:
Java Security Update delivers a number of security enhancements and is recommended for all Macintosh users. This update includes the following components:

Java 1.3.1
Java 1.4.2

and I can't access the kbase article with details now.

I'm not going to jump on it quite yet, but probably later this week.

When you read the security advisory it says exactly the same as the Tiger patch..

I have installed it (no reboot necessary BTW), but not tested Neo/J yet.

Hell, I decided what the heck and have become a guinea pig anyway... so far (from a brief bit of testing and nothing exhaustive) NOJ seems to be working fine. I can launch it and Print Preview to PDF, presentations open, my spreadsheet is OK... that's as far as I have got without experiencing anything funky.

And hopefully it remains that way as the bugzilla is still down for me - is anyone able to get access to bugzilla?

I also installed the update and so far have not noticed any problems with Neo (using writer and bibliography database).

No; I get an error page immediately on trying to load in Camino. Have Patrick or Ed already contacted Dan?

For reference, here's the full release notes. Always much more explanatory than the silly knowledge base entries:

http://developer.apple.com/releasenotes/Java/Java142RNTigerR2/index.html

It's unclear to me if all of the fixes apply for 1.3.1, but browsing through the list I see a number for which Patrick's already found workarounds.

The 10.3 version of the update does break the Java Embedding Plugin shipped in most recent alphas/betas and nightlies of Mozilla browsers. Sad

Hadn't noticed. But I am not a big user of Java over the web..
