I seek help with a problem. I have two user accounts on my iMac (G4, 1 GHz, 256 Mb RAM, OSX 10.4.2, 80 Gb HD) both of whom use NO/J v1.1. Each time it starts up user xxx (not the proper name) gets a message saying:

"Either another instance of NO/J is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing you should make sure user 'xxx' closes NO/J on host 'host 217-43-225-146.range 217-43.btcentralplus.com'."

ie before user xxx has opened the application the warning is for that user to close NO/J. The same message appears for the other user (but saying yyy instead of course). The message can be cancelled and NO/J starts up but then there is no response when trying to open Preferences in the NeoOffice/J menu.

This is a new phenomenon that dates from about the time I upgraded to OSX 10.4 although I am not sure if it was exactly then. In installing 10.4 I completely deleted the hard disk because of some other problems.

I have tried uninstalling and downloading and re-installing the application with no effect. I have also tried deleting the Library NO/J folder for both users but also with no effect.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

My first guess is that both user accounts are sharing the same $HOME directory. Can you execute "ls -l /Users" in a terminal and post the output?

As it was pointed out in another thread in this forum, the Preferences only points to the Tools->Options top line menu option. Does this work for you?

How are you exiting NeoOffice/J? Are you completely closing out of the program prior to switching users? Does each user have an independent /Users/ directory? These are only two questions of many that may help discover why NeoOffice/J is telling you that the program was not shutdown cleanly when switching users.

Re pluby comment I executed the instruction in Terminal as requested and got the following (total screen dump)

Welcome to Darwin!

Mean anything?

Re jjmckenzie51 comments

1. yes I noticed the other thread after posting my query and the Tools->Options route works. Perhaps the error messages have nothing to do with the preferences?

2. For switching between users all programmes are left running and we switch using 'fast user switching'. Each user has a separate /Users directory. That works with all other apps and it would lose its point if we have to close NO/J each time so I would rather not have to do that.

This looks correct.

Are there two different users here? It appears as if the first user's directory is NOT owned by the user and should be:

drwxr-xr-x 3 roberheather roberheather .......

This may be the source of your problem if you are switching from robertheather to theheathers. However, I think you stated you are switching from hmt to one of the two other users.

See my comments above.

This seems to be a problem with 10.4.2 and the release. I build the code before the Performance Patch and Preferences does work. However, this may also have to do with the fact that some of the Operating System code changed between Panther (10.3.x) and Tiger (10.4.x) and building on Tiger may fix the problem. This is for Patrick and Ed to look into and see if there is a fix.

This may be the source of your problem. I can create a second user and see if I get this error. This will have to wait until the weekend unless Patrick or Ed is willing to look into this before then (I'm driving a total of three hours per day from Tucson Arizona to where I work.)

FWIW, I've just checked to see if I can have NOJ running at the same time under two different accounts (using FUS) and I didn't have any problems at all.

Edit: Though it just occurred to me - I am using the Performance Test patch 1.2 so maybe that makes a difference?
