There's been some really bad Wiki spam today.

The rollback feature isn't working properly and some past revisions are corrupted, causing content to be lost.

I'm working on fixing things manually, but it will help if no one else is also trying to fix things.

Edit: It's ok to resume editing; just be careful.

Thanks,
Smokey

Update: I believe I've fixed everything except Talk:Main Page and Neo/J Tips and Hints.

Please check other pages (esp. Fr:Accueil and the Neo/J Feature Comparison) to make sure that all the content is there.

It looks like some of the diffs (or versions of the pages, whichever way MediaWiki actually stores things) were corrupt (blank instead of containing the actual text), so when I used the rollback option, or when I accessed a particular revision to edit it to avoid rollback issues, the content wasn't there, leaving partial pages (like Talk and Tips and Hints).

Sigh.

OK, everything restored, I hope.

Please do be careful when editing pages to ensure that all the existing content does show up in the edit box when you start editing...I'm still worried about that.

Now some dinner.

Smokey

i'll look into the DB issue, I do have a recent back up, but don't think that restoring a few week old version of the DB would be worth losing what we have done.

Yeah, because the foo'd diffs are several months old, anyway, (May/June) in lots of cases.

Hopefully it's making good diffs from here on out.

I got a release announcement this week that said the previous version was vulnerable to massive dataloss when worked on by someone with IExplorer. I don't quite know the details, but I find it curious that we got such dataloss around the time this bug cropped up.

Quote:

MediaWiki 1.5.0 is the new stable release branch of MediaWiki, and is
recommended for all new installations.

See the release notes (link below) for details of new features and
requirements.

Any wikis running a 1.5 beta or release candidate are strongly
recommended to upgrade to the final release, which includes a number of
bug fixes and a security fix for CSS bugs in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

IMPORTANT: Running a 1.3 or 1.4 wiki and don't want to jump to 1.5 yet?
Be sure to upgrade to 1.3.17 or 1.4.11, also released today. Versions
prior to 1.3.16 and 1.4.10 have a serious data corruption bug which is
triggered by a spambot known to operate in the wild.

That sounds exactly like what happened here, although some of the edits seemed a little random for a spam-bot (like editing some pages several times to progressively delete our content, and only adding spam links to others). I think we're running 1.4.9 now.

So, Jake, if you want to see about loading the backup then, let me know the date of the backup, and I'll make current wiki-source copies of all pages changed/added since then and will add them back after you load the backup?

wiki is up.
same DB
only sysops can make users, which is currently just smokey and myself... so we'll have to figure that out. we need a page that is a "ok, so how do i make a user name?" page, and probably a sticky here somewhere...

smokey, i am sorry to ask this, especially since i am sure you have already, but could you put together a list of those usernames to boot and email them to me? i'll get them out of the DB.

everything should be working, and it should have all teh 1.5 niftyness... whatever that is =)

one more, i made a new user page (link is on the main page talk).

what i will do is make a re-direct email that goes to all the sysops, and then whoever gets it first can set up the account.

we will probably need another sysop... (i'm looking at you ovvldc)

speaking of which, is waldo still around? I haven't seen him in a bit...

<looks innocent> Moi? </look>

Seriously, no problem. I can deal with that. I am yet to install 1.5 on my own machine, though. Sometime this week.

I've seen Waldo pop up now and again; he's been online sometimes when I'm here, even if he hasn't posted lately.

Thanks for all the quick work on the wiki today, Jake.

I'll get you a list of spammers to squash later tonight.

Looks like we have a new offer to do a German translation (in the next thread down), which is also great; we need a German translation!

Smokey
