Well, there are known issues with import of documents with bullets or "Greek" text on Mac OS X. No one in OOo really seems to care, as this problem has been present since the beginning. And unfortunately someone on Linux confused the bug report by mentioning a bunch of Linux non-issues in the middle.
The problems don't exist on Windows since the same fonts are used by OOo as by Word there. I had a look at a document not too long ago, and it looked like Word is storing the Greek text in a pre-Unicode format (i.e., alpha was the Roman "a" and simply changed the font to make it look like alpha. Of course 99% of Mac OS X doesn't behave like that; for something to show up in the Symbol font, it has to have a Unicode codepoint in the range Symbol supports (mostly Greek)--and Roman "a" doesn't. Windows (and Word) apparently still have that bit of pre-Unicode behavior, and no one's adjusted the import filters to convert [symbol font][roman character] to the proper Unicode code point to make it display on the Mac.

This is a long-standing problem of Word document import in OOo or NeO/J. I have the same for Word document containing equation written with EquationEditor under MS Word. Under Apple Pages, the equation blocks are converted as images and cannot be modified. Under OOo, the only real solution I've found was to rewrite equation . You can open an equation editor window into OOo by double-clicking on the equation block (like with Equation Editor in MS Word), and then you can edit the code of the equation formula.
