I cannot open Start OpenOffice.

I successfully installed OpenOffice.org1.1.2.
I obtained the software on a CD from a software outfit in Laredo, Texas. When I double-click on the Start OpenOffice icon, the icon appears to come up, but then nothing. No window, no message. Nothing. The icon is on the dock; it wiggles, but OpenOffice does not come up.

I tried opening from an X11 window. When I type in the command "setenv DISPLAY localhost:0" I get the message:

bash: setenv: command not found

I would sure like to get on board, but my review of the list of problems in the forum is daunting.

My parameters:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4 Cube
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 450 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 640 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 3.3.2f1
System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.5 (7M34) Kernel Version: Darwin 7.5.0

Version of Open Office: 1.1.2
Version of Start OpenOffice.org: v1.ob9.
X11 Version 1.0
Location of the OpenOffice.org installation: MacIntosh HD > Applications
Single user install

Thanks a lot,
PaulC

As you are starting with OpenOffice.org 1.1.2, do yourself a big favour... save yourself a lot of unnecessary headaches and just download and install NeoOffice/J instead (along with patch 0 to fix the Preferences menu item). It is based on OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 and is a lot easier to install and use and makes far better use of Mac OS X than the X11 version. In the not to distant future, the next version based on OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 will be released and will feature a lot of improvements (primarily memory usage and speed based ones).

Edit: Looking at your machine specs, you may suffer a little owing to the amount of RAM you have. 640MB will be OK, but more would be better. The next version of NeoOffice/J will use less RAM than it currently does.

If you have to use OpenOffice.org 2.0 on the other hand, then you'll need to use the X11 version for now.

I took your advice and downloaded NeoOffice/J. It seems to work fine.
Now I tried to uninstall openOffice.org, and nothing happens when I click the Uninstall OpenOffice icon. Can I simply dump all the OpenOffice files?

I wouldn't like to say - I'm not sure what the OpenOffice.org1.1.2 installer puts where other than the /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.1.2 folder. You will also need to delete the ~/Library/Preferences/OpenOffice.org1.1.2 folder as well.
