I am a new user. I want to be able to use the special characters (like an r with a dot on the bottom) using shortcut keys. I know there are supposed to be dead keys that you use, but I don't have any of those on the Mac keyboard (the or key, eg.) Does anyone know how to do this? I can't keep hitting insert character and double-clicking on the character every time I need a special letter, which is all the time.

Depending of the language you are writing in, you might be able to switch to the keyboard layout featuring the characters you need. Unless it is to write special characters, not in any language (keymap), like math formulas. There is a standard shortcut to swich keymaps (command-space). Even for one char it's much more effective than using the "insert special char" menu item.
If you use X11.app the keyboard switching is effective in OOo and that why, IMO, this is the best X11 to use on a Mac.
If this doesn't work, you can remap some keys with xmodmap, as long as the character you need is known to X11.
If this is the way you choose, ask here for an example.
Notice: Neo/J use native Mac fonts and then gives acces to fonts/keymap in a friendlier way. But then it's not easy to custom remap the keyboard.
