Hi, I'm new to OpenOffice and would really like to try it out. Is the OpenOffice for Mac cross-platform compatible? i.e. can OO documents saved on Mac be viewed and edited on Windows machines and vv?
Thanks! |

yup!
i've personally tried the big three, MacOS (X11 and Neo/J), Windows and Linux with various assortments of documents (none terribly complicated, but i'm not a terrible complicated type of person) and all came out like the same on each platform.
give or take platform nuances (like fonts and printers and start menus)

The biggest cross platform issues that may crop up are fonts. Other things will have problems too (embedding Java applets, Netscape plugins, perhaps some complex StarBASIC macros), but for simple documents there's no issue exchanging with OOo on other platforms at all or between OOo variants.

I've had trouble opening files saved by oo in windows. Some files - not all - in both writer and calc open as empty files. I never had this problem switching between Linux and Windows. My mac system is iBook G4 OSX 10.3. |

I have been able to open powerpoint files that were made on a pc and would not open in the mac version of ppt! OOO has saved the day many times with its office translation capabilities. |

From my experience, the troubles haven't been any worse then trying to get Windows Office files opening in Mac Office...especially Office 98. Fonts are really the biggest issue that I've had, but my workaround has been to use stylesheets (a mixture of character level and paragraph level) instead of explicitly setting the font willy nilly in documents. Then when I move the document over I only have to fix up the stylesheets and not go through the entire document. I used the same trick in Office...using FrameMaker is really what showed me how much time that trick can save
