I'm brand new to OpenOffice, sorta new to OSX 10.4.3 and new to this forum. Not a developer, just a text jockey trying to find a cheap replacement for flaky, intrusive MS Word and Excel apps.
OO2.0 looks like a potential replacement for MS Office 2004 - but the download had no install gadgets, presented me with an icon that launced nothing useful. Mac OS X install links point to Windows/Linux installation issues. I've poked around the site looking for a comprehensive OS X 10.4 install troubleshooter, but no joy. May be here somewhere, but not that I could find in an hour of searching.
So I downloaded 1.1.2. Install went OK, until I punched the Start OpenOffice button. I haven't the foggiest where to point the search for an X Window server. Tried Finder, which crashed. Found and trashed Start OpenOffice prefs. Went looking for an X Server hint. XDarwin is mentioned in some of the literature on the OO site, but not listed in my available applications list.
What now? |

Note: I have moved your post to the "OpenOffice.org MacOS X X11 Support" forum as you are using the OpenOffice.org X11 products. The NeoOffice forums are for the NeoOffice product.

ok, the X11 server should be in the applications/utilities folder. you would have had to install it on purpose from your 10.4 DVD. If it isn't there, pop in the dvd and install it.
I've made a read me and FAQ for X11, they are stickied in this forum (and on the wiki http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com) |

Tried to install X11 from the install CD, and install supposedly was successful, but not a trace of the App in the system, other than a file in the Receipts folder.
Yet another issue to sort out..... |

Thanks Jake, you pointed me in the right direction. Ya needed to be a bit more specific about installing X11 from the 10.4 install disk. There are several places where the bugger lurks. I banged on the one found in the Xcode folder several times. Might as well have been bangin' on me own noggin. Scroll down a bit to the package icon for Optional Installs>follow the install script to a list of possibilities and expand the Applications list, check X11. NOW click on install. Takes about ten times as long, but it worked first time. |

Tiger:
1. Insert Tiger Install disk.
2. Wait for install page.
3. Scroll down and look for Optional Packages. Click on icon
4. Scoll through new window and look for X11 install.
5. Click on X11 icon and go through install procedure.
6. Reboot system if necessary.
7. Check Applications -> Utilities for presence of X11 icon.
8. Click on X11 icon. You should get a Xterm window.
9. Try opening OpenOffice from xterm window by changing directories (using the cd command) to the location where you installed OpenOffice.
Type in "soffice" in this directory and OpenOffice should start and run.
X11 for Tiger is available for download from Apple, but it is easier to install from the DVD.
