Hi Patrick,

Just wanted to let you know there seems to be a consensus on the preferences files for OOo 2.0

These will (it seems) be put in ~/library/application support/

I was just thinking NeoOffice might want to put its stuff in the same folder, for convenience and to avoid confusing people Smile. Maybe not for now, but something to think about in the longer term. For details, see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57253

Best wishes,
Oscar

I already mentioned why I didn't use the "Application Support" folder in a different thread: OOo 1.1.x cannot handle spaces in the user preferences path. Maybe they have fixed this is OOo 2.0, but OOo 1.1.x (and Neo 1.2) are stuck in a folder with no spaces.

I've read the discussion, and I'm not convinced. ~/Library/Application Support should be for just that - application support. Things like plug-ins and mail folders can go there.

Preferences should reside in ~/Library/Preferences.

Due to broken code in OOo 1.1.x, you cannot write to a directory with any spaces in it. It is not something that Patrick/Ed/myself can fix. It will take a major fix in order for OOo 2.0.x to be able to do so and maybe (but very unlikely) that this code will be backported to the 1.1.x series (as a matter of fact all work on 1.1.x has seemed to have stopped.)

Thus, and for now, the 'stuff' that NeoOffice writes out will remain in ~/Library/Preferences.

I think this discussion is closed.

The problem here though, is that OpenOffice.org includes both application support type files and preference files within the one user folder, so to have it in either location makes partial sense (and for OpenOffice.org to separate support files from preferences files so that they could reside in both folders just isn't going to happen). Personally, I think locating it in Preferences fits better as you are more likely to look there first for any troubleshooting that needs to be done and this is far more like the Mac way of old...
