I have to be able to make diacritic marks (an a with a bar on top, an r with a dot on the bottom). Is there any way to do them short of going to insert special character every time? That would take me forever.

I should have tried to answer before if you asked more precisely (which keyboard/keymap do you use etc…)
True diacritical are difficult to play with.
The character ? is called "amacron" in X11. I don't know of a r with a dot below, but there is a ? with cedilla "rcedilla".
So to make short, launch a terminal, copy and paste the following two commands (this presume an US keyboard):
Code:
xmodmap -e "keycode 23 = r R rcedilla Rcedilla"
xmodmap -e "keycode 8 = a A amacron Amacron"
Now you have the so-wanted characters on alt(shift)-a and alt(shift)-r.
Notice that you loose the "aring" on the "a" key, and "registered" on the "r" key.
If you are satisfied with this keyboard setting, add these two lines to you [home]/.xinitrc file. If you have none, create one, by copying the default one, presumably /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc.
If you prefer to put thoses chars elsewhere on the keyboard, tell where.
