I have loaded OpenOffice without any trouble until I got to the installing Java 1.5 The Tools>Option>Java shows just like your install PDF says, that Jave 1.4.2 is installed.
As instructed, I unchecked "Use Java runtime ext", I closed, then re-opened OpenOffice but when I returned to the Check Jave runtime ext it still showed only 1.4.2.
I have noticed that the address of the 1.4.2 Java is in System/Library etc but when I try to Add the 1.5.0 Java I am restricted to Users/jt/library which obviously will not lead to the System/Library
The PDF instruction says that the update should be automatic.
Your help would be appreciated.
I also seem to be locked into the Writer as that is what loads evey time.
Many thanks, Tink. |

not sure about the java part, but as for 'stuck in writer', simply create a new document of the type you want to use (spreadsheet, draw, etc) and the other progs will open. |

Sorry. I must be thicker than I thort!!!!!
File, Open,New,Spreadsheet did it.
As for the Java thing. I removed the address given when I clicked add and supplied the correct address.
It should be OK now. How can I check?
Many thanks, Tink. |

My guess is that it is somewhere on the Apple site. There should be an install document for installing Java 1.5. I think that I remember being able to get this from them. However, I can suggest using Google to find the document.

Thank you for your reply.
The way Tinkerer worded his msg, I got the impression he was talking about an OOo document.

That was also my first initial impression until I read through the message a second time and I got the impression that Tinkerer was talking to either the NeoOffice folks or Apple. I know that there is no Install for Java 1.5 pdf document on NeoOffice (I looked) and that there was such a document on the Apple site. So, I made a deduction that Tinkerer was talking to the Apple folks. If I'm wrong, ooops.

Or, is Tinkerer referring to an item in an OOo Install pdf? _________________ Sláinte!

NeoOffice does not require nor use Java 1.5. If you are using NeoOffice 1.1, it requires Java 1.3.1, which is provided by Jaguar (MacOSX 10.2), Panther (10.3) and Tiger (10.4). If you are using NeoOffice 1.2 Alpha or Beta, it requires Java 1.4.2, which is provided by Panther (10.3, with an Apple provided update/patch to Java) and Tiger (10.4). Java 1.5 is only provided if you have downloaded and installed it on Tiger. I know of no program that runs on Tiger that requires Java 1.5, however I do work with a few Java programs and applets that are not MacOSX specific that do require Java 1.5

Tinkerer's post appeared to reference an OOo document, by my reading. In any event, I've been able to switch from 1.4.2 to 1.5.0 by following the procedure described earlier:
- Tools->Options
- OpenOffice.org->Java
- De-select "Use JRE"
- Quit and restart OOo
- Tools->Options
- OpenOffice.org->Java
- Select "Use JRE"
- Select /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/1.5.0/Home
(or something like that)
- Quit and restart OOo
OOo should now use Java 1.5.
I'm going to be experimenting with the SVG import plugin, so I need 1.5 for that...

Hope this helps a little... |

How about just setting the Mac OS X default to Java 1.5?
/Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Preferences.app |

Let us know the results as OpenOffice.org 2.0 and OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 is built with Java 1.4.2, not Java 1.5. It may work and it may be seriously broken.
