Hi all,
I've had a hell of a time understanding where to post this -- the OOo bug tracker is very imposing, and I don't feel I should post it to any particular mailing list...
I downloaded the 1.0.3 GM version for OSX/X11. I'd been using 1.0.13, which worked perfectly (no crashes, no unexplained behavior -- only problem was that my system fonts weren't recognized, which seems fixed in 1.0.3). Now, however, it seems that the GM was built with some kind of buggy font antialiasing built in, and I can't for the life of me turn it off. I disabled AA font rendering in the system prefs, but the screen still looks awful. It could be a dylib conflict (wrong version somehow) somewhere on my system -- I have the latest version of fink installed -- but I don't know where.
I'm thinking it is an error with the antialiasing code, as 1.0.3 is a magnitude slower on my 800 MHz iBook than 1.0.13 was. Anybody else run into this? Anybody know of a better way to bring this issue to the notice of the developers without raising ire? I'm slowly falling in love with OOo, and would like to switch to it from MS Office (especially now that Panther looks to have X11 built in by default), but as you can see from the above linked image, it's a little unusable right now on my machine.
The rest of my system specs:
- 384 meg of ram
- Apple's X11 beta R3
- OSX 10.2.6
- Ati Radeon 7500 32meg video card.

I have not run into that error. Yes, that looks horrible. How do the fonts in other X applications look? Are they also horrible? If so, then it's an issue with Apple, probably. If not, you way want to fire up spadmin and remove all the converted system fonts, re-convert them, and restart the application. It's also possible that a reinstall [of OOo] will solve this, though that's getting a bit drastic.
OOo1.0.3gm runs fabulously on my 600MHz iBook (128 RAM, Apple X11 beta 3) and several orders of magnitude faster than Final Beta did. That only issue I have run into is multiple users and shared documents (which works great in all my Linux installs). I filed a bug on that at IssueZilla http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16228.
The interface at IssueZilla is a little daunting at first. However, it's a standard BugZilla interface, so if you've ever filed a Mozilla bug (I've filed quite a few, myself.) then it should be familiar. If not, just sort of walk through it step by step. You should even be able to attach that screenshot right to the bug report.
Man, that does look really really bad. i think the solution (as found in OOoDocs.org forums) is to use only Millions of colors. I'm not sure Freetype works well in thousands.
