Searched the forums and don't think this has been addressed.
Generally finding exchanging files with MS Office to be effective but have one lingering problem with table widths.

When I open doc's created in MS Word the tables usually spill over page width but with no pattern: some are 15cm wide others are 18cm wide.

I have to select each table and then right click and select table>width and check the Relative button to make them resize to the page width.

Is there a way of overcoming this?

The latest version of NeoOffice 1.2 is NeoOffice 1.2.2, which contains all the patches for NeoOffice 1.2 (like 1.2.1) plus a fix for the installer bug.

Conversion from and to MS Office documents is handled by OpenOffice.org code, and what you experience really sounds like an OpenOffice.org bug. If you can reproduce this behavior with OpenOffice.org 1.1.5, then it definitely is an OOo bug.

Unfortunately, the aim of NeoOffice is to create a stable and Mac-friendly port of Openoffice.org; the developers will not fix OpenOffice.org bugs. Fixes for bugs and issues with MS Office documents will be or have been included in later versions of OOo, but NeoOffice 1.2 uses a 1.1.5 codebase. New versions of Neo (such as 2.0 Alpha 4) use a 2.0.2 codebase (2.0.3 for the upcoming Aqua Beta). Your problems may have been fixed in these releases.
