Hi Midsail, I have had a look at this several times over the last three years. In short, I did not get it to work and it is not very high on my list of priorities. But, I have seen that Epson have recently released an update (www.epsom.com) of their scanning software for OSX 10.4 (there are two packages to be installed) and I read somewhere that they claim it will make any application work with their scanner. As far as I remember, installing their software disables Apple's Image Capture for the scanner. May be you want to try this out and get back to us with your results?

The built-in "Scan" command only works if SANE is installed on your Mac. SANE is a UNIX framework to support scanners, sort of like Apple's Image Capture.
I don't have a SANE compatible scanner, so I've never been able to even attempt to figure out all the configuration required...I do know that Eric Hoch got it to work with his scanner in OOo 1.1.x, so it *should* work.
There are Mac packages of SANE available here, but you do need to see if your scanner is supported (if there is a SANE "backend" for it).

To follow on to Smokey's posting, scanning files driectly into NeoOffice may be more hassle than it is worth. So, a simpler way may be to use the scanner's software to create an image file in *.jpg or *.png format and then insert that file into NeoOffice. It is a two step process, but it is more likely to work than NeoOffice's scan menu item.

My 3 most used software packages are Graphic Converter, NeoOffice and Vuescan (rather than the Epson Scan software).
I have therefore got used to scanning to the desktop and then inserting as needed.
When scanning several items I think it is far quicker than trying to scan straight into any app. |
