I just downloaded OpenOffice and installed it onto my new 10.3 system - using the XFree86 that came with the installation of OO. However, now that installation is finished (and I installed all the extra components) OO and XDarwin both refuse to start. I am given the output shown below.
I have tried looking for the file USA.keymapping but cannot find it on my disc.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Terence

This keymapping problem affects OroborOSX as well. Apparently Panther has done away with the keymapping files and gone to something different...Apple X11 takes the keyboard information from the system locale, not the keymapping files.
The only trick I know of is to find a Jaguar (or earlier version) and copy the /System/Library/Keyboards directory from it over to the Panther box. That's the workaround that was used for OrorborOSX 0.9 preview and seemed to work. If you did an "Archive and Install" Panther install, this directory should be hanging out in "Previous Systems".

Panther seems to be incopatible with Free86. I had the same problem and it disappeared after installing X11USR which is located on the third Pather CD. OpenOffice works perfectly now. Try it.
Panther isn't incompatible with Xfree86 otherwise Apple's X11 wouldn't run since it is based on Xfree86. It is only a matter of which version you are trying to run or build.
The first correct building and running version was a Xfree86 a 4.3.99-16 which was avaible via fink and afaik via cvs or as a snapshottarball on the xfree homepage too.
The currently avaible Release Candidate 2 for Xfree86 4.4.0 and the RC1 both build under Panther too and run without problems but I am not that hardcore user of X so that I find the bugs.
You have the choice and it's up to you which X you prefer.
I had the same problem, so I installed XFree86 version 4.4, but I still got the same error, which led me to realize that OroborOSX was still using an old version of something. I discovered that there is an XDarwin.app inside /Applications/OroborOSX-Folder/OroborOSX-v0.8b2.app/Contents, so I replaced it with the newer XDarwin.app from /Applications. Now I get this error:
OroborOSX: XDarwin has not initialised correctly. Aborting.TRACE3: MakeAlertWindow (XDarwinFail)
That's probably not enough to go on, so I included all of the console.log messages I get (when trying to launch OpenOffice) below.
When I downloaded OpenOffice it came with:
OpenOffice.org version 1.0.3
StartOpenOffice.org version v1.0b8
OroborOSX version 0.8b2
XFree86 version 4.2
XDarwin version ???
I am running with:
Mac OS X version 10.3.3
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!
Nick

OroborOSX does use its own internal version of XDarwin as an X server. It's patched differently from the XDarwin that ships with the XFree86 distributions. I'm not sure quite how, but it may have to do with transparency and paths.
You may want to try version 0.9, the latest released version, from their sourceforge site:

I believe it should fix the problems OroborOSX has on Panther.

It is probably in a FAQ somewhere, but the primary contributors to both XDarwin and OroborOSX, state categorically that you require XFree86/XDarwin v4.4.0/v1.3.0 or OroborOSX v0.90, to be successful on Panther.
FYI, I installed both those versions today on Panther (brand new install of Mac OS X 10.3.3), and specified the USA.keymapping in my ".xserverrc" file (it may not be required as Ed said). While I haven't tested OOo 1.0.3GM on this combination, I did test a later version of OOo and it worked fine.
Aha! I was so focused on what version of XFree86 I had that I failed to notice I wasn't running with the latest version of OroborOSX (v0.9). It's working now. Thanks so much!!!
