Hi all,
as the last post from Glenner has waited for a week now and no other ideas have come I would suggest we put the thing into the wiki - but in my opinion without talking about german support here. Because until now there is not enough interest in it.
Thus I would WIKI the following:
>>Deutscher Support<< (own link to that in the wiki)
>>Da NeoOffice eine Portierung von OpenOffice.org für MacOS X ist, können die meisten Fragen des täglichen Gebrauchs von NeoOffice mithilfe der deutschen Support-Seiten von OpenOffice.Org gelöst werden.
Wir weisen hin auf
http://de.openoffice.org/probleme.html

And Glenners translation:
Quote:

Because NeoOffice is a port of OpenOffice.org for Mac OS X, the majority of questions concerning NeoOffice 1.2 may be resolved by consulting the German support sites of OpenOffice.org, e.g. http://de.openoffice.org/probleme.html and its linked resources such as "Mailingliste" and "Foren und Newsgroups", and www.ooowiki.de. Please note that NeoOffice 1.2. is based on the OpenOffice 1.1.5 code. Therefore, any tips and hints that are provided in these fora with regard to OpenOffice 2.x may not necessarily be applicable to NeoOffice 1.2.

For any queries specifically relating to NeoOffice, rather than to OpenOffice, please refer first to NeoWiki (http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com/index.php/De:Hauptseite) and the more comprehensive English version before posting a question at the trinity fora http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums.

(I did cut off the last two sentences. We could add them again when more people here ask for it)
Would that be ok, Glenner, Doctype?

Edit: minor corrections
Edit: Correction as suggested by Glenner in following post

Thomas, that is ok I think. Should there not be a comma after "und nicht auf OpenOffice"?

Hi Glenner, I wouldn't think a comma is necessary there.

I would rather write instead of "in englischer Sprache":

"Die Sprache der Trinity-Foren ist englisch, es finden sich jedoch regelmäßig deutschsprachige Forumsteilnehmer ein, die bei eventuellen Übersetzungsproblemen helfen können"

Translation (kind of): "The forum language is English, but there are on a regular basis German-speaking users, who may help with problems of translation"

That's because it is difficult to describe your problem in English, when the user interface is in German (or any other language). So I wouldn't want to chase away somebody, who doesn't feel fit to say everything in perfect English - I would rather have him wait for somebody, who can help him or translate the problem for the pros. That way, we wouldn't "guarantee" German support, but we also wouldn't rule it out ...

... and, sorry I didn't read the draft earlier ...

Grüße, Martin

Yeah, Martin, that is the solution.
Smokey, can we wiki that as follows (including Glenners translation and Doctypes suggestions)?

Or is this something not for the wiki but for: http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/de/contact.php? Patrick, Ed, what do you think?

Sorry about that; I put this thread in a tab last week for follow-up, and then after I got back to Washington, Camino crashed on me after several weeks of uptime Sad

I think maybe the best place for this text is a sticky thread in Support titled "German-language support" (in German)--partly because Patrick likes to keep the text in the Planamesa pages in sync across languages, and partly because support questions end up here.

I've also been thinking for a while of a better way to emphasize the "support" and "troubleshooting" resources of the wiki on the wiki, but so far I haven't come up with a good solution. Perhaps a new page called "Support" that is added to the 3 links right below the "latest release" line on the Main Page, which would include language-specific versions of the text developed in this thread (e.g., links to oooforum.org instead of .de for the English version) and links to the Installation, Troubleshooting, and Tips & Hints pages in the wiki, would be a good way to do that?

Smokey

Smokey I would prefer your last suggestion, but I would think Patrick and Ed should give their 2 cent Very Happy
EDIT: Oh and: we just got it ready for taking into wiki or elsewhere today, thus no reason to worry.

Hmm, I am wondering whether it would be possible to streamline the support "front" a little. Let's say to have the FAQ, a wiki search (as self support), and access to one or two of the forums (as assisted support) on one support page. This may be less overwhelming for the uninitiated user. All the other resources could be kept under something like expert resources or similar or even where they are right now.

Random thoughts (may or may not be relevant):

- the planamesa hosted Neo pages (download, faq, etc.) are auto-translating based on user info string received from browser indicating language through the joy of PHP.

- main www.neoffice.org pages are english only due to lack of PHP support on ancient crufty web server (to be replaced when new mail server is online, that gripe belongs elsewhere...)

- the trinity pages and forums are presently not redirected based on user-info strings from the browser to hsot languages (IIRC)...users need to automatically choose their interface language for their login to see any language-specific frontpage stories and forums

- jakeosx is our primary contact for the frontpage (www.neo) and the wiki. The wiki is flexible, but unfortunately the www limitations are quite restritive at present. That will change as soon as the !@!#$! openbsd mail server is happy.

As Ed points out things will change sometime in the future with a new server I suggest the following: Let us put the text in question to the wiki for the moment and a link into a sticky at Support forum. There already is a Stickyhttp://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1052, perhaps we could add the link there?
We could see then, if this works.
When the new server is on, we could decide whether or not another solution is possible and better.
Whats your opinion?

Well as nobody contradicted my last proposal in half a week, I think we do it as i suggested earlier: Putting the text to a new wiki page, english version as "foreign language support: german", german version as "Deutscher Support", and putting a link to that wiki pages to http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1052.

I repeat the text for the wiki here to have an easier access and ask smokey or jakeOSx to bring it to wiki. Once this is done, it should be easy for people with other languages (e.g. french) to do the same thing using our works.

Text (updated to Neo 1.2.1):

>>Deutscher Support<<
>>Da NeoOffice eine Portierung von OpenOffice.org für MacOS X ist, können die meisten Fragen des täglichen Gebrauchs von NeoOffice mithilfe der deutschen Support-Seiten von OpenOffice.Org gelöst werden.
Wir weisen hin auf
http://de.openoffice.org/probleme.html

So, my opinion: lets wiki that and bring this theme to its preliminary end Wink
