OK, I will be the first to admit, I do not really understand how to create and work with databases. The database component on NeoOffice seems to be fairly easy, but if anyone can recommend a good book on the basics of databases that would help, please.

I have created a simple database, for the altar servers at my church. Now I want to create mailing labels. I read the help file, and it should be easy; go to File->New->Label, but when I get into that dialogue box and I click on the Database button, the only option I am given is one called "Bibliography" which I did not create. I even tried to do it from Writer, and the only Data Source is "Bibliography." How do I get the database I created to show up as a Data Source?
Thanks,
Fr. JC

Unfortunately we're still pretty thin on the ground in terms of really understanding the new Base component from OOo 2 and certainly I don't know much at all myself. Hopefully someone else can help you here Smile

I'd highly recommend looking around for some of the public documentation on OOo Base and the other forums for some good introductory guides. A good starting place may be the oooforum and other user guides mentioned in this forum topic.

Your database is probably not registered for Data Sources, which is somewhat a surprise, because the option to register is usually checked automatically when creating a new one. Anyway:

1. Go to Tools > Options...
2. In the tree view (left) open up NeoOffice Base and select Databases
3. If your database isn't in the list of "Registered databases" click New... and add your database (file) to the list (via Browse... you may select from the file system, the name should be selected correctly automatically)
4. OK.

... your database should now be in the Data Sources & in the Database pop-up menu when trying to create a new label. If not, then something serious must have been gone wrong and we'd have to look into it.

And, this to Ed & Patrick: What makes me really very very happy with Aqua Beta is the native file picker. Thanks very much for this precious improvement!

Martin

Thank you to both of you who responded to my question. Martin, it was because I did not register my database. I thought registering my database was like registering it on the web so that others could use it. Silly me. Now it works fine. I just need to learn how to do databases, mail merge, etc. And thanks to the other responder for the tip about the OOo Forum. I have bookmarked that site. I have some other questions, like creating (or better yet importing from MS Word) some forms with drop-down menus. Now I know where to look. Thanks again.

hi,

Form imports do not necessarily function in the way that you might expect, and in fact may not function at all, because some of the forms you can create in Word are automatically bound to hidden VBA code that will not of course be functional in Neo/OpenOffice. Your best bet is to open your ODB database document and create a form that ressembles your Word form. Obviously, this means more work, particularly since some things that just "work" out of the box with MSOffice or Lotus Approach or FMPro, have not been implemented in OOoBase, and probably never will be.
