Every now and then, I get the "guilts" that I haven't progressed this issue at all, beyond the point it got to at Easter, with Thomas and Philip's valued contributions et al. At that point, I had developed some draft packages for NeoOffice, with the aim of gettigng a 30MB package of clipart and photos, that folk could download and easily insert into NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org. See page here and linked 3 pages.

However, what happened was that I got wind of a parallel project happening at OpenOffice.org Forum, originating from a nice chap in Hungary, who goes by the name Kami. I have finally touched base with Kami, and here is the text of our discussion. There is real promise here, of benefits to our users, and to all users of OpenOffice.org.

With some other keen folk, I have been trying to develop a gallery package which is compact enough to download, while still comprehensive enough to be useful, and with lots of attractive pics. We have been particularly focussed on using a much-edited version of the great "openclipart" package, which we have been trialling here .

Quote:
Kami: I will check it. But I do not like to use vector based fies as png pictures. So I will download these gallery files. Of course we must have a good SVG impot filter. I will integrate this filter to OOoP to collect more user experience.

aussie149 wrote:

It seemed to us when we started this that

1. This could be useful not just for NeoOffice, but also for OpenOffice.org more broadly, since the clipart only needs a means to be placed in the gallery in each case.

Quote:
Kami: I agree with you. It would be usefull also for OpenOffice.org. I will do everything to get integrated it. I can do it at first to my OpenOffice.org Premium. that is an enhanced version of OpenOffice.org. I would ask you, could you provide these pictures, galleries in one (big) zipped file? Can you tell me more about licenses? I do not like to confuse the original authors.

aussie149 wrote:

2. There appeared to be nothing available at the time.
3. We wanted to include some nice photos as well
4. We were still resolving all the issues of licencing.

Point 1. is still relevant. However, we have now become aware Idea of a "Premium" version of OpenOffice.org, availlable from Hungary, which contains within it a clipart and photo collection. I have downloaded and installed it. It comes in English and Hungarian versions. It has a great collection of pics, parallel to what we were developing [many were in fact the same as we had in our collection].

Kami: And German versuion will come whitin days in version 2.0.3.

aussie149 wrote:

Now my questions [at last! Wink]:

1. Does anyone here know much about this version?

Quote:
Kami: Yes, you can always ask me Surprised)
The idea behind Premium. The users like more extras (like in commercial products)... They can get commercial like components (for example fonts, galleries, templates, samples). Then I started to make it OpenOffice.org source compatible. Now we have an integration ready Premium source modifications. The gallery theme names for example localizable, the templates are available for the selected language etc...

aussie149 wrote:

aussie149 wrote: 2. Are there any plans to bring this Premium version into the mainstream OpenOffice.org pages [eg the English pages]?

Quote:
Kami: I really like this idea, but some community member does not. I will try to do by best. Also I have some license related problem, where the a few fonts are licensed under "freely usable but do not modify" license. Masters of debian hate this thing Surprised)

aussie149 wrote:

3. Does the collection have the right licences for widespread free distribution? [ie is it all open source?] I note that at least some of the photos are labelled "Arksoft", but I can't track down what that is, except that it's connected to this site . And many pics are from the openclipart collection, but many are not.

Quote:
Kami: Lot of them are absulutelly free. Many of them are freely available for using and distribution. http://partners.dravanet.hu/gionni/ :: The author offered to me to publish these free pictures with OpenOffice.org (and Premium). They are greet and free.

aussie149 wrote: If we can be satisfied with answers to 3. above, I'd push for this Hungarian version to be available to all OpenOffice.org users [inc NeoOffice users], and change direction with our package as a more specialised pack.

i was looking into that package that lets you run command line scripts as a program earlier... then i got distracted. so i'll look again.

but really, this is a very simple thing. the program just needs to simply copy the files to the appropriate folder.

the question is, do you want to have all the files in the program, and then some sort of checkbox selector to move them in? or have the files outside as a drag and drop type program? or both? or something different? or ninjas?

BTW, those of you using Aqua Beta 2 on 10.4.7 and playing with the new Java 1.5 stuff can also import SVGs using this filter.

It won't ever be a part of OOo until either 1) it works with a lower version of Java--the OOo baseline is 1.3.1, iirc--or 2) OOo raises the baseline, so SVG still isn't a good solution for the clipart project, but you can have fun with SVG clipart now yourselves Wink

Interesting - though it doesn't work for me.
It works fine in OOo 2.0.3, but in NeoOffice I get a java exception:
Quote:
java.io.IOException: SAX2 driver class org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser not found
at org.apache.batik.dom.util.SAXDocumentFactory.createDocument(SAXDocumentFactory.java:417)
at org.apache.batik.dom.util.SAXDocumentFactory.createDocument(SAXDocumentFactory.java:344)
at org.apache.batik.dom.svg.SAXSVGDocumentFactory.createDocument(SAXSVGDocumentFactory.java:231)
at haui.xml.svg.SVGBuilder.loadDocument(SVGBuilder.java:59)
at haui.office.uno.filter.svgimport.SVGImportService.importer(SVGImportService.java:75)

I've select Java 1.5.0 in the Preferences, so it should be OK. Anyone got any ideas what's wrong?

Can you get this working on NeoOffice, Smokey? I can't. I have Java 1.5, but I can't enable the import function [avg-import-jar] in that download above. It's in the Package Manager under Tools, along with the two other [.xcu] files, but it's not enabled.Edit I read the entry above and made the change to 1.5 in Preferences. That meant I could enable the .jar function. I restarted NeoOffice, but the svg graphics format is still not recognised.

Did you add the .zip file to My Packages in the Package Manager, or did you add the three files separately?

I added the .zip file, which results in a working filter in OOo, but as noted above a java exception in NeoOffice.

I added them sep'y. Have now tried adding the zip file. That looked morte convincing as it loaded and enabled files, but the result is still "unknown graphics format"

Strange. I get an option in the open dialogue that says "SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics Import (*.svg)", but then the Java error.
Did you choose Java 1.5.0 as the virtual machine in the Java tab of the preferences?

Didn't read everything completely, but: Try to stick to Java 1.4.2 for something that end users need to do -> Panther still lives.

yes. Just now, taking a tip from Oscar above, I changed Java back to 1.4. Same result: unkown graphics format.

It looks like something isn't getting installed properly. The filter requires Java 1.5 to work, so if it was installed it should crash with a Java error when you try to run it under 1.4, so its not even getting as far as that.

I'm afraid I have no experience in Java (error messages or otherwise), so I'm all out of helpful suggestions now. Heck - I can't even get it to work on my machine! Sad

I'm getting back onto topic now Wink Re the clipart package. I investigated the Hungarian option. I don't think this will suit us. What Kami is working on is a big package with fonts, icons and kitchen sink etc. all packaged up with OpenOffice.org in his case. I think this is much more than we were aiming at. What we were looking to do was provide a package which could be easily installed, and which contained only about 500-600 images, with appropriate licensing, attractive, useful and a good coverage of basic needs, with an installer. So, back to start.

I have now started trying to talk to OpenOffice.org art project about getting some server space to host a package of clipart for NeoOffice/ OpenOffice.org However, I am stuck at the first hurdle: my messages are disappearing into the ether, then reporting "lost in space" after a couple of days. The two addresses I have tried so far are to Scott Carr, who seems to be leading the project at scottcarr at telocity dot com, and contact at ooextras dot org

Can someone please point me in the right direction here?

Peter
