I was wondering if there is a keyboard shorcut for footnotes. On the Office Trial if you press option + apple, it inserts a footnote. I'm asking because I'll be using my computer for school and I'll need a quick way to add footnotes.

I don't think that there's a predefined keyboard shortcut for inserting a footnote, but you can define one easily enough. Go to Tools -> Customize... and then select the "Keyboard" tab. Find an unused shortcut under "Shortcut Keys" that works for you, and click on it. In the Category pane, click on "insert" to highlight it, then do the same with "Footnote" in the Function pane. Then click on the "Modify" button, and the "Shortcut Keys" pane should refresh and show your newly-defined shortcut. At this point, your new configuration will be saved in your user preferences, but you can also save your keyboard configuration to a separate file from the same dialogue in case you're using Neo on multiple computers and wish to carry around your keyboard config with you.

thanks. the only problem with this is that when I press apple+f it still asks me to choose the footnote settings instead of just putting one in. Oh well.

You may be able to make a keyboard binding to invoke a macro, but unfortunately that's beyond my own skills with the software.  Perhaps it might be a path you can investigate, though.

I just tried and it works perfectly well. Do this (step by step):
1. Open: Tools>Customise>Keyboard
2. Press apple-f [this will find the shortcut apple-f on the list in the upper window]
3. In the lower left (category) window find Insert, click on it.
4. In the lower middle (Functions) window find Footnote, click on it.
5. Now click on the Modify button (top right).

You are done. Now when you will press apple-f, it will open a dialogue which asks what kind of numbering you want. I usually use auto, so I simply click on Insert (or hit Enter on my keyboard). Now, if that bothers you as an unnecessary step, I can suggest two things:

1) imagine that the keyboard shortcut consists of consecuitive (can be done very quickly) apple-f+enter
2) record your apple-f+enter on a macro and then assign a keyboard shortcut to this macro. My personal opinion - it is not worth it.

BUT in case you think it IS worth it: here is step by step to record macro and assign it a shortcut:
1. Open Tools>Macros>Record Macro [a small window will appear with 'start recording' on it.]
2. Click on 'start recording'
3. Open Insert>Footnote
4. On the dialogue that opens, press Insert (or click first on the numbering option and then Insert, i.e., do what you would do normally when you insert a footnote)
5. After the footnote is created (just don't insert text ) click on 'stop recording' on the macro window. It will ask where to save the newly recorded macro. Just give it a name (for instance 'insert_macro') and leave it in the default location and press save.
6. Open: Tools>Customise>Keyboard
7. Press apple-f [this will find the shortcut apple-f on the list in the upper window)
8. In lower left box scroll down to NeoOffice Macros. Expand the category by clicking on the + (I guess on triangle in new Aquafied Neo). Expand category 'user' and category 'standard', i.e., until in the middle box 'Function' you find your 'insert_macro'.
9. Now click on the Modify button (top right).

Now you should be totally done and equipped for your business of inserting footnotes with just one keyboard shortcut
