Major Noob but determined to kick the windows habit
I am a longtime Wordperfect user and my documents are heavily linked where I am able to use floating cells to link to other floating cells and/or named tables within the document.
Are these functions possible in Writer?
Can tables be named in Writer?
Can cells in a table be referenced to a field or some other way?

Ok, I'm managing to make a major mess of things! While trying to thank Patrick for fixing my ill-posted links, I managed to wipe my entire post. Sigh. It's one of those days, I guess.
Here's a recap:
yes, you can name tables.
The rest of your questions I don't know the answer to, because a) I don't use tables much and b) I don't know what you mean by a "floating cell."
You may find some of the answers you need from our wiki. In particular, I would point you to:
the Writer Specific Hints section. Especially articles on cross references and indexes. And
Note that I am in the process of moving some of the Tips and Hints to a different page. I'm not sure when I'll get around to moving the Writer tips, but if the link to the Writer Specific Hints above doesn't work, try looking on the NeoWriter page.
