I haven't read all the posts and hope I'm not "rehashing" an old issue, but I'm using NeoOffice Aqua 2.0 Beta 3 (patch15) on both by old PPC iBook (running OS 10.3.9) and my new Intel Core2Duo iMac 20" running OS 10.4.8.
On the old iBook, there is no problem sorting in NeoCalc; however, on the new iMac, there are cols. (text) whose rows cannot be properly sorted into order.
I can provide the spreadsheet in question for debugging, though, because it works flawlessly on the PPC with 10.3.9, I suspect the bug might not be in the source code so much as the compiled code for the Intel chip. Could it be that the compiled code for the sort algorithm makes bad calls to a stack?

It is a known issue that was just discussed again recently.
As you surmised, it is a bug related to Apple's compiler that affects only Intel machines. It is fixed in NeoOffice 2.1 EA (Early Access) due a change in the compiler used.
