I can make a table of contents, selecting the single line entries I want and applying a style selected from Heading1 through Heading 10. I followed the instructions in Help.
Unfortunately for me, the resulting entries in the TOC contain not only the single lines that I selected but also the following first two lines of each paragraph. I only want the single line that I selected and applied the style to.
I also tried Heading(no number), but that did not produce any entries in the TOC.
I have not been able to find a way to modify the styles, either.
Is it possible to do what I want? It seems reasonable.
- Make sure your style includes a margin rather than line breaks. The whole section of the header-styled text will show up in the TOC.
- Test (by turning on numbering in the TOC) of your extra text is exactly part of that header, or that the first lines of the paragraph are formatted in a style that is not a heading, but is included in the TOC. If so, turn that off.
I hope this helps, but I am not sure where your problem is coming from.
Best wishes,

If you haven't done so already, read through the article on Table of Contents in the Neowiki.
To alter the heading paragraph styles, see the Using Paragraph Styles article in the wiki.
You can also designate custom styles (with names other than heading1, etc.) for the table of contents. That is explained in the Table of Contents article in the wiki.
If the wiki articles aren't clear, or appear to contain mistakes, please let me know by posting in this thread. (I'm the one who translated both articles from French)
I don't have any personal experience with TOCs, beyond some simple testing I did when I translated the articles, but I would say that Oscar's guess is probably correct.
In addition to his suggestions, it would be a good idea to:
-turn on View NonPrinting Characters to see if you have line breaks instead of returns at the end of your heading lines.
-check the "Next style" setting of your heading paragraph styles by selecting the stye (in the Styles and Formatting window) and looking at the "Organizer" tab. "Next style" should be set for the style you want the body of your document to be.

First, let me apologize for my tardy follow-up. Usually I get an email notice when there's a response, but not this time, although I did check the "notify" box when I posted it.
Thank you all for the info and bountiful references.
It turns out that the simplest fix works. Putting a CR instead of LF at the end of the desired heading works.
Nevertheless, I'm trying to learn more, which leads to a couple more questions.
Oscar, I don't understand what "margin rather than line breaks" means.
Lorinda, I don't see "Organizer" tab in the Styles and Formatting window.

Nick,
My apologies, the Organizer tab is in the Paragraph Dialog window that comes up when you choose Format > Paragraph or when you modify an existing paragraph style. I was writing too fast and used the wrong window name above.
