@jgd: I was searching for an example about applying the new solver function, so when I found your article it was natural to translate it immediately... in italian we have a proverb (?) like this "needs is the mother of inventions"...
In English it's typically given as "necessity is the mother of invention", and that has been my impetus for translating some of the Calc articles: Jacqueline or Valter had written something explaining how to do the thing I needed to do at that moment

I have Solver right in the menu, there are clear instructions out there somewhere, and the interface is simple and intuitive (and familiar to Excel users), but the answer is wrong!
I have the identical spreadsheet in Excel that I imported into NeoOffice Calc, I checked and re-checked the conditions - and even created a new spreadsheet with really simple conditions just in case. It says it found a solution, but unfortunately the solution is not correct...
Or am I doing something dumb? Happy to send the .xls and .odc to anybody who would take a look. Thanks.
Not meaning to be ungrateful, but it also does not have the option to "set value to". You can only minimize or maximize a value. Excel has this, and it is really useful.
I would bet that you have found a bug in the Solver code. The Solver code was developed by the Novell's "ooo-build project" engineers as an attempt to replicate the same functionality in Excel. Although it seems to work for most people, it seems to be only used by a small number of NeoOffice users. Also, since Novell's "ooo-build" variant of OpenOffice.org has few users (probably less than NeoOffice does), I suspect that there are plenty of bugs in the Solver code that will slowly get uncovered by users like yourself.
What you can do is file a bug in Bugzilla, attach a sample document to the bug, list the detailed steps to produce the erroneous result, and list the expected and actual results that we should be looking for.
The more detail that you provide in the bug the better for if we cannot fix it, we will report the bug to Novell's ooo-build project engineers and details will help them reproduce the bug too.
