Although OpenOffice has some bibliographic features built-in they are a far cry from what is offered by programs like Bookends, Sente, Pages, EndNote, BibDesk, etc. Some programs, such as Mellel and Microsoft Word already offer integration with some of these programs. I would love to see NeoOffice work with the developers to implement something similar. I personally use Bookends and currently switch to Mellel for serious academic work precisely because of this tight integration.

Do you know if any of these apps integrate using Services? (e.g. the NeoOffice menu > Services...but through something greyed out?)
I'm wondering if there's a generic interface they share that is a non-Word-VBA interface (which I know is used...and complicated...). I do not use nor own any biobliographic apps so have no frame of reference for how they interoperate with Word et. al.
Yes, BibDesk uses Services and also installs some kind of support (don't know what exactly) that allows one to use cite key completion in Cocoa editor of choice.
You can try BibDesk, since it is GPL. But it is just a (very good) frontend to bibtex databases. I have no idea how you could integrate with bibtex.
