And, like our beta .docx support, it apparently doesn't convert all .docx documents either
The choice of RTF is interesting, since that format does not (to my knowledge) natively support images/ole/etc., so converting documents with those will be quite lossy.

Actually, it's possible (probable?) that odf-converter translates more than this new converter; except for a few issues here and there, it covers a good portion of the Word OpenXML specification, and formatting loss is mostly due to incompatibilities between ODF and OOXML (i.e. things that aren't supported in one of the two formats, and thus can't be carried over) ... |

There were also several other programs that did the docx to RTF conversion I remember seing listed on Macworld's news section a while back. It wouldn't surprise me if it's simply a rehash of whatever open source code that is (or a variant of odf-converter). Kinda sad since really, Mac users are now left out in the lurch and probably will be required to pay to upgrade to get real OpenXML compatibility.
I've already started to see some OpenXML attachments flilter into my inbox at work...and I suspect it will just continue to grow.

OOXML Word 2007 converter (#3): Failure and mild success [MacFixIt]
MacFixIt wrote: | Alternatives Note that there are a number of alternatives to the official Microsoft Word 2007 converter that might provide better results for some documents. These include:
- docXconverter
- manual extraction

This is still the 0.1 Beta. Sure, it doesn't look promising, but it'll probably be a lot better once they release the real thing. Of course, by then, odf-converter will have become far superior |

There’s a new beta version of the .NET based ODF-Converter out. It is supposed to convert spreadsheets and presentations as well. Let’s hope that Neo integrates the new version soon. |

Looks like they are moving fast on this.
We'll definitely include whatever is the latest in next NeoOffice Early Access release.

Well, Microsoft released Microsoft Office Open XML Converter - 0.1.1. No new features, but this version fixes a bug that caused the converter application to become unusable well ahead of its intended expiration date. |

Yeah, you wonder why they put an expiration date to it when it's going to be released for free. Perhaps it's an aggressive patch checking mechanism |

I put my money on it disappearing once M$ Office for Mac is released with built-in support for ".docx" et al.
a.k.a "You want cross-platform? You buy our product."
Am I too cynical? |

That would be a very bad way to treat Mac customers, considering that the converter plug-ins are available for free under Windows ... why would it be different on the Mac ? |

I think it's more just that it's a beta release. I've seen closed beta releases have expiration dates to ensure that people don't continue to use the beta and purchase the software, but I don't think that's the case here... It's probably more to ensure anyone using the converter is forced to periodically install updates. A number of people I've done home support for have never updated any of their MS Office components ever, even though I think I remember seeing an autoupdate tool.

I agree (that's exactly what I meant by "aggressive patch checking mechanism"). |
