Pah! I don't know!

You go through all the hassle of backing up everything, repairing permissions, downloading the update, installing it, crossing your fingers as it re-boots twice, and re-repairing permissions and does it unstick the scroll ball on my Mighty Mouse?

Does it H*ll!!

Come on Apple. Why can't you get these things right. Don't you know I use my Mac in a workshop?! I've got dirty, oily hands when I try to scroll.

I demand the next update includes a de-greasing update that downloads automatically via USB to update the Mighty Mouse's hardware.

What! That's not possible?! Read these forums, Apple. Patrick & Ed do the impossible all the time and you've got way more resources than them!

Still only going from side to side!

Andy

P.S. I'd settle for downloadable hand-wipes!

AHAHAHAHA

Well said!

Of the three "mighty" mice I use regularly, two of them have the stuck/unidirectional scrollball as well. Gah!

You'd think a system update with a palindrome version number would have magical powers...

Lets just say you need to keep your scrolling finger very clean.
Make sure you don't use the same finger to remove earwax or pick your nose that you use to scroll. Razz

Apple does have instructions for freeing the ball, but they've stopped working for me, and due to their wonderful industrial design you can't get at the rollers to clean them.

So if you regularly have little bits of sheet cork, dirty light oil, and dried up contact adhesive on your hands, don't get one!

Andy.

Ah, this explains the semi-functional ball on my brother's Mighty....

Now to hunt those cleaning instructions....

Last time this happened to me, I googled and found a solution [pun intended] fairly quickly. From memory it involves rubbing alcohol, and pressing hard. Smile I think I may need to do it again, because I'm getting problems moving it in one direction.

oh... in macuarium there's an explanation and four pages of discussions for "how to clean it..."
but they ask to visit this page:
http://www.brendanfenn.com/cleanmouse.html

Maybe it can help
(I cannot see it because my "proxy server" block it)

I usually clean mine by complaining to the IT guy that my mouse stopped working and I need a new one. After all, a happy programmer is a productive programmer...Wink

Smile Oh for the days when I had an IT guy or gal to call on! I noted at least one suggestion online to use a Q-tip [?] / cotton tip/ cotton bud soaked in rubbing alcohol [cheap from pharmacists, and also useful for rubbing horses, cleaning old vinyl LPs, and so forth. Actually, I have no idea about the horses, I've never tried it on one Wink]. I seem to remember that that was what I used - and my mighty mouse is still operating months later..

Well, I thought about complaining to the IT guy, but like the boss he's a complete git! (oh, no, wait a minute! They're both me!! Wink )

Not sure what rubbing alcohol is, but if guitarists use it to harden their finger tips then its called surgical spirit over here. I don't have any of it here so I tried using Meths* instead and I'm now happily scrolling up and down again!! Wink

Cheers.

I have the same IT guy. Sad

If I used Meths instead - I'm sure "I" would still be "happily scrolling Up and down"! Shocked

Philip ( OH! M-Spirits.... I'd still be "happily ... scrolling! Cool )

I always thought of rubbing alcohol as strictly isopropyl alcohol, but it seems that is actually only a minor form of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubbing_alcohol
