It obviously varies from country to country, Smokey. Here it's 99% isopropyl alcohol, and a cheeky little vintage Smile

Lay a sheet of clean, white paper on your mousepad or desk. Turn the mouse over and, applying medium pressure, scribble all over the sheet using the scroll nub. Flip it over and I'll bet your scroll ball is clean. Furthermore, wash your hands before you use your computer.

Well, Apple's software updates might not have inspired me to clean my ball, but the addition of scroll wheel support to horizontal movement and drop down menus did. Thanks Patrick & Ed.

That looks WAYYYYYY complicated!

Do we always have a Box-cutter/Stanley knife, or isopropyl/rubbing alcohol, on hand when the mouse's ball (!) gets temperamental???

My tried and trusted way, might be a bit off-putting for some - but it's been
workin' for me!

When the ball stops working, in any direction, I take a deep breath and
give my ball a good lick! Yes - the mouse ball.

Then I rub it on a clean(-ish) piece of cloth that might be close-by - like
my shirt or trousers (jeans are good for this) - few rubs to soak away any
excess.... emm.. moisture .. and .. Presto! The Ball is King again! Cool

Might do this every couple of weeks - depending on my hand-hygiene. Confused

That's it. Easy. I've been at a loss to understand all the flaming on the Apple website about the Mighty Mouse. I love it - as a mouse. And maintenance is soooo easy!

Hope someone finds this of help!

Or

Hate to say this but!!.

Get a Microsoft or other brand USB mouse and use that instead.. That is what I finally did. Just got sick of playing with my little ball - Laughing

Got no issue with it new mouse is brilliant. And the Might Mouse is sitting on the shelf watching jealously

Excellent tip. I'm now scrolling in all directions!

I'm going to add this to my list of "better ways of doing things than Apple suggests". The other item on the list is using a Pizza cutting wheel to open a Mac Mini!

Cheers,

I've reverted to my old USB mouse because I clean the ball using Apple's recommended method and in several hours it's back to scrolling no where or only one direction. It's madness! Madness! Mad

What is a good lube for lubing a computer mouse/mousepad? I see there are some "anti-friction liquids" available in computer stores, but they're ridiculously expensive. So I'm wondering if there's something else I can use to make my mouse glide more smoothly.

Hmm I really don't know. You could always try powdered graphite, but I think that it's a carcinogen. I found some of the best are just sheets of smooth stationery paper; I just replace the paper once it starts to get worn down.

On the off chance that someone here hasn't got the word, there is a sure cure for a sticky Mighty Mouse Ball: The Magic Mouse!

I got to the point that I was having to de-stick the mouse ball every couple of days. Got mad at it and bought a Magic Mouse, and haven't looked back. This thing is great, and works really well with Neo.

The magic Mouse is a magical device then Smile

Though TBH it never got any girl interested in me (though a girl did ask me why I was carrying a pebble in my laptop bag) Sad
