This is what I did:

1) got new powerbook
2) installed apple's X11 with Apple's X11 SDK
3) Downloaded OOo dmg
4) Mounted and double-clicked on Install_OpenOffice.org

The icon bounces in my dock a few times and then just disappears.

My error:

While I haven't seen a crash myself, there have been some reports of this Installer crashing - it is a Java application.

1) What version of Mac OS X did your PowerBook come installed with? How many steps from there to the current 10.3.3 you have? Did you change anything significant on your machine we should know about?

2) Just to be clear, you need to install the X11 User package - the SDK alone is not sufficient, and not necessary.

3) Could you launch the Terminal application, and type the following command :

Code:
java -version

and report the information displayed.

4) I assume you have plenty of free space available on the boot volume on a new PowerBook - a safe number for this Installer is anything over 1 GB.

I have seen some things like this reported on the IA forums with the JVM crashing when running for the first time. The general 'fix' has been to reinstall Java on the machine. While Panther (which I assume you're installing since you're using Apple X11...) has two Java versions installed, OOo uses only 1.3.1.

Anyone have further insight into 1.3.1 Java VM woes? I believe the reinstallation doesn't do anything except rebuild the "java shared archive". I never found a set of steps to manually do that, though.

To get a set of steps to manually rebuild the Java Shared Archive, do the following :

1) Use Pacifist to open up the "Java.pkg" (part of the "OSInstall.mpkg" contents) from your favorite version of the Mac OS X installer packages.
2) Extract the /System/Library/StartupItems/JavaStartup/JavaStartup shell script.
3) Look at the JavaStartup script.

There are other ways to do this, but you would essentially be doing a re-install of Java anyway, so there wouldn't be much gained.
