I don't know how I did this and even less how to correct it.
First, I installed OO on my G4 laptop. 1GHz processor, 1 Gig-o-RAM, system 10.3.3. When I run OO the background is grey and there are 5 windows: login, xterm, xterm, the clock, and (of course) the text document window. It all looks very PC like.
That was okay until I installed OO on my desktop G4 running system 10.3.3. OO looks much better, resembling the screen shots I've seen posted.
I've re-installed OO several times on my laptop but never looks like the one on my desktop.
What can I do?

You probably installed XDarwin rather than installing Apple's X11.app. The default X11 window manager gives you what you saw. You could get a slightly better look & feel by installing the "window-maker" Window Manager that I believe comes with the OOo 1.0.3GM installer - I'm not sure if you have to manually run a setup program after you have done the install.
But if you want the same appearance as on your desktop machine, you will need to install Apple's X11.app. If you believe you already have it installed, then you might be able to fix your problem by editing the ".xinitrc" file in your home directory (if it exists - if it doesn't, there is extra work required here), to change "twm" to "quartz-wm".
If you have XDarwin installed, but not X11.app installed, you might run into some problems - it is possible to have the two co-exist, but only you do things in the right order, etc.
You might want to check some of the online forums for more information about installing X11.app.

One thing you may want to take a look at is the "Documentation" folder that was installed along with OOo 103GM. Inside is a "Using X11" folder that contains an RTF with an introduction to what X11 is, choosing window managers, and the like. It's a bit out of date but still can provide some good reference material for the Mac user who's first diving into the Unix world with OOo
